The 5-Day Great Apes Virunga Adventure is an epic and ultimate gorilla trekking adventure in Virunga National Park. You will get an opportunity to visit the mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. You will trek to the mountain gorillas two times following two gorilla families and also be part of the chimpanzee habituation experience. Virunga National Park is the only wildlife destination with mountain gorillas, lowland gorillas, and chimpanzees.

In the 5-day great apes adventure you will spend 4 nights at Mikeno Lodge. This lodge is the only luxurious safari lodge in Virunga National Park. It is located right near the Rumangabo Park headquarters and offers great views of the Volcanoes and the forest. Primates and birding safaris start right from the lodge as you explore the wildlife in the great Virunga forests.

While at the lodge you can be part of primate excursions to the Senkwekwe center where you will see resident orphaned gorillas. You will get to learn about the mountain gorilla conservation journey ahead of meeting the other mountain gorilla families in the forest. The following days will be followed by gorilla trekking adventures that are very rewarding.

Full Tour Package

Day 1: Transfer to Virunga National Park

Your driver guide will pick you up and have a briefing about the tour before setting off to Virunga National park. You will then have a relaxed drive to Virunga national park amidst sightings of the great scenery and the Congo country side. Arrive in time for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure. You can choose to visit the Senkwenkwe center or have a nature walk in Mahura forest or Visit the Congohounds. In the evening you will return to your lodge. Dinner and overnight at Mikeno Lodge

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

After breakfast at your lodge you will go to the Bukima ranger post for a briefing about the gorilla trekking experience. From here you will be guided by to the forested park for 1 to 2 hours depending on the movement of the mountain gorillas. Once you get to them you will stay in their presence for an hour getting to know more about the gorillas. You will take photos and later to your lodge for a rest. Meals and overnight at Mikeno Lodge

Day 3: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

You will start this day with an early breakfast at your lodge and then be taken for a briefing about the chimpanzee habituation experience. Explore Mahura forest following the chimpanzees routine as you learn more about them. The chimpanzee habituation experience will enable you get a better understanding of the chimpanzees and also be able to see other wildlife species in the forest including birds and other primates. You will have late lunch depending on the time you finish the habituation experience. Later you will have an excursion at the Rumangabo or can choose to Relax at the lodge. Meals and overnight at Mikeno Lodge

Day 4: 2nd Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Bukima ranger post for a briefing ahead of your second gorilla trek. This time around you will follow a different mountain gorilla and get another opportunity to see mountain gorillas once again. Just like the first trek you will spend 1 hour in the presence of the mountain gorillas. Later be transferred back to Mikeno Lodge for a late lunch. In the afternoon you can explore the forest or relax at the lodge

Day 5: Departure

You will have breakfast at your lodge and have a relaxed drive back to Goma for a drop off at your Hotel or at the Grand Barrier border for a transfer to Rwanda depending on schedule.
