Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

The Chimpanzee habitation is an experiential activity that enables you to follow the routine of the chimpanzees in the wild giving you up to 4 hours with them.

It is only done in Uganda’s Kibale National Park and it is very ideal for primate lovers.

Time Taken on Chimpanzee Habituation

The Chimpanzee habituation experience starts early morning at 6:30 am where after a briefing at the park headquarters you are led to the forest. You start from where the chimpanzees slept and slowly track and follow them observing their routine.

There are a number of rules and regulations to follow while on the habituation process. It is advisable to keep with the colleagues and rangers to avoid getting astray and lost in the forest. One is also recommended to keep at least a few meters from the Chimpanzees. Much as they are very mobile, it is still better to keep the distance away from them. Making noise and flash photography is also discouraged to avoid irritating the chimpanzees.

Following the routine and actively participating in the habituation process gives you an insight in the everyday life of the chimpanzees. It is the best and recommend experience for primatologists, photographers and film makers

Before any chimpanzee families are open for tourism, they have to undergo habituation for them to be accustomed to human beings presence. This is usually done by a specific group of rangers and national park researchers. Chimpanzee habituation enables you to participate in the process of making the chimps accustomed to people but it is only open to 4 tourists a day.

Best time for Experience

You can enjoy the chimpanzee habituation experience any time of the year. However for easy navigation through the forest, and the best photography moments then we recommend doing this in the dry season.

The dry season in Uganda starts in June and ends in September. It also doubles as the peak tourist season when the number of tourists visiting Uganda is many. It is therefore important to book your chimpanzee habituation and chimpanzee trekking permits in advance to avoid missing out.

Chimpanzee habituation unlike the chimpanzee trekking safari adventure allows you up to 4 hours in the presence of the chimpanzees. With this, you get to observe, learn, and have enough photography opportunities.

Kibale National Park has provisions for both the chimpanzee experience and the normal chimpanzee trekking safari. On this, you are allowed only one hour in the presence of the chimpanzees.
