Rwanda Big Five Safaris & More

Rwanda Big Five Safaris dominate Rwanda’s savanna wildlife adventures in Akagera National Park. Rwanda has become one of the most sought-after safari destinations for wildlife enthusiasts.

The country is renowned for the iconic Rwanda gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park. It is also home to the Big Five Mammals – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos. The Rwanda Big Five mammal population, which had been greatly reduced, is now flourishing thanks to the great conservation efforts.

The Rise of Rwanda Big Five Safaris

Rwanda Big Five Safaris were once overlooked in favor of other East African Big Five destinations, including the Masai Mara & the Ngorongoro Crater. This was after several wildlife species had become extinct.

Akagera National Park was transformed through the great conservation efforts of the Rwandan Government and African Parks. This saw a reintroduction of lions and rhinos, plus continuous monitoring of the other Big Five family present. Akagera currently has a stable wildlife population, making Rwanda safaris more enjoyable.

Rwanda now offer predator action experiences with lions and leopards hunting their prey. You also get to journey in the footsteps of elephants, the largest land mammals, and watch rhinos freely roam the savannas. These are best seen on game drives, boat cruises, and guided walks. Guided by expert rangers, Rwanda Big Five safaris guarantee exclusive experiences and exceptional photography opportunities.

Rwanda Safaris Beyond the Big Five

Rwanda safaris offer more wildlife viewing opportunities beyond the Big Five. Nyungwe Forest, in the southwestern part of the country, is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species.

The forested park has habituated chimpanzee communities offering opportunities for Rwanda chimpanzee trekking safaris. Hiking through the lush forest brings you to chimpanzee trails, where you observe chimpanzees play, forage, and go about their daily routine.

Tracking the Future: A Mountain Gorilla Census in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Discovery Journeys

Tracking the Future: A Mountain Gorilla Census in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

A mountain gorilla census is currently underway in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This effort aims to provide updated data on the remaining mountain gorilla population. Mountain gorillas are among the most endangered primate species on the planet.

They are endemic to the forested mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the adjacent Sarambwe Reserve, and the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. Gorilla tours are a great part of the regions Discovery Journeys. The survival of these rare apes is therefore crucial and depends on the protection and conservation of their unique ecosystems.

Understanding the Mountain Gorilla Census

A mountain gorilla census is a systematic count of the giant apes. It is conducted periodically, focusing on data collection that features gorilla family sizes, health status, births, and habitats.

The exercise is done by a team of researchers, rangers, and conservationists who traverse the forested mountains to locate and record the gorilla families they encounter. Once collected, the data is used to monitor the trends and implement the much-desired conservation strategies.

The last mountain gorilla census was completed in 2019. It established 459 individual mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, accounting for nearly half of the total remaining gorilla population on the planet. The ongoing census seeks to update these figures, identify emerging threats, and assess the impact of past sustainability and conservation efforts.

Significance of the Census

A mountain gorilla census enables the collection of accurate data that informs better conservation policies. These focus on ecosystem conservation and best sustainability practices. It also guides on the best measures to follow when involving the community in habitat protection and reducing poaching.

The collected census data supports local and international collaborations aimed at preserving mountain gorillas in their last remaining ecosystems.

About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the most prominent Uganda gorilla tour destination. It is located in the south-western part, about a 9-hour drive from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The forested park covers a land area of 321 square kilometers of both lowland and montane forests.

Bwindi is home to over 120 mammal species, including mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. It is also home to over 400 plant species, 350 bird species, and 200 butterfly species, including Albertine endemics. It is based on this diversity and outstanding natural significance that the park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Bwindi currently has 22 habituated gorilla families that are open to tourism. This offers one a unique opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. Bwindi gorilla trekking safaris offer the ultimate primate trekking adventures and help to generate revenue to support community and wildlife conservation initiatives.

The experiences are limited and closely monitored to minimize human impact on the mountain gorillas and their ecosystem. You can opt for a normal gorilla trekking tour that allows you up to an hour in the presence of the mountain gorillas.

The mountain gorilla habituation experience is more extensive and experiential, allowing you up to 4 hours with the gorillas. This is, however, restricted to the southern sector of Bwindi called Rushaga.

Chimpanzee trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is also home to chimpanzees. These have not been habituated, but once done, will greatly complement gorilla tours in the park. Kibale Forest is currently the best chimpanzee trekking destination in Uganda. It is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primates, including red-tailed monkeys, baboons, and colobus monkeys.

Other notable Uganda chimpanzee trekking destinations include the Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest, and Budongo Forest. Combining chimpanzee and gorilla tours enhances the appeal of Uganda gorilla tours, attracting more primate enthusiasts.

Uganda Gorilla Conservation Journey

The Uganda gorilla conservation journey has, over the years, been compromised by the surrounding communities. Before the gorilla parks were gazetted, the community entirely depended on the forest ecosystem for food and survival. This, however, exposed the wildlife to poaching and other human activities like farming that encroach on their habitats.

Directly involving the community in tourism activities, conservation, and sustainability has helped to minimize impact. This is because of the creation of revenue-sharing programs and direct employment opportunities that enable the local people to directly earn from gorilla tourism. It creates a sense of ownership and responsibility that makes the people more vigilant about gorilla conservation programs. This has, in turn, contributed a great deal to mountain gorilla protection.

Uganda Gorilla Conservation Challenges

Mountain gorillas still face threats, including habitat loss, climate change, and disease transmission. The habitat loss is due to an increase in human population demanding land for settlement and agriculture.

Such threats, if not checked, will continue negatively impacting mountain gorilla health and reproductive patterns.

The Future of Gorilla Conservation

The ongoing census is a great step into the future of gorilla conservation. Census results will be used as a tool to adapt the applicable conservation policies. It is vital to continuously involve the local communities, governments, and international partners for a holistic gorilla conservation program.

Such collaborative research and tourism efforts will make Uganda a leader in mountain gorilla conservation. Let us therefore commit to responsible and sustainable travel that focuses on minimal impacts on the community and wildlife ecosystem.

Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours. Discovery Journeys

Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours and More!

Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours are remarkable as you journey through one of East Africa’s oldest rainforests. The Forested National Park is located in southwestern Rwanda about a 5 to 6-hour drive from Kigali Rwanda’s capital. It covers a land area of 1,019 square kilometers of Montane rainforest.

It also has other ecosystems including swamps, bamboo, and tropical rainforests. These are home to several wildlife species including the highest primate species in Rwanda. There are over 1,050 plant species, 85 mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Such diversity makes Nyungwe Forest iconic and it was on such basis that it was inscribed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Even better, Nyungwe forest lies in the Albertine Rift Valley. It is an important water catchment area with one of the furthest sources of the Nile River. The Forest is ideal for Rwanda birding tours and other Discovery Journeys expeditions. Below is a brief about Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours and other epic safari tours you can be part of on your visit there.

Nyungwe Bird species

Nyungwe Forest is Rwanda’s most Important Birding Area. It is home to over 300 bird species including Albertine Rift Valley endemics. The forested park is among the best places to see highland forest birds given its bird species diversity.

Birding Tours and safari adventures in Nyungwe however mainly depend on calls. The forest is thick and it is not easy to spot bird species like it is in the open savanna ecosystem. Notable birds you can see in Nyungwe include the Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, and Rwenzori Apalis among others.

Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours are among the best Rwanda adventures you can ever be part of. Birding is done following the different trails with chances of seeing other wildlife species in the park. Other iconic attractions you can explore on Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours include waterfalls and caves.

Best Time for Nyungwe Birding Safari

Nyungwe Forest Birding Tours are best enjoyed from November to May. During this time many bird species are in full plumage. It is also the time migratory birds are present in Rwanda. These come from as far as Europe which increases the bird diversity and chances of viewing.

Since Birding in Rwanda mainly depends on calls, several birds are more vocal from March. With this, they can easily be identified saving time compared to just randomly hiking the forest without any guidance.

These months from November to May however also double as the wet season months when rainfall is highly unpredictable. December to March are relatively dry and the chances of rainfall are a bit minimal. The dry months from June to October are generally great for wildlife viewing including birding. They are dry and it is easy to hike through the forest with minimal rainfall disturbances.

Nyungwe Primates

Nyungwe forest is most famous for primate trekking. It has the highest chimpanzee population in Rwanda with 3 communities open for tourism. Apart from chimpanzees, the forested park has a high population of colobus monkeys, L’hoest, and Blue Monkeys.

Chimpanzee trekking is the commonly done primate safari adventure in Nyungwe. The two major communities that are tracked include one at Uwinka and the other at Cyamudongo. On the day of the chimpanzee trek you are expected at the park headquarters by 7:00 am. There you are briefed about the dos and don’ts during the trek. After the briefing, you are then guided by a ranger guide and hike for 2 to 3 hours until you meet the chimpanzees. This is a remarkable encounter though limited to only one hour. Chimpanzees have the highest DNA similar to humans at 98% and can easily adapt to human behavior if interaction is not limited.

Other primate treks are also guided by the well knowledgable range guides who have traversed the Forest for year. Primate trekking in Nyungwe is doable throughout the year.

Nyungwe Forest has a chimpanzee habituation experience in Gisovu. This is more experiential and takes you behind the scenes following the routine of the chimpanzees. It involves following a chimpanzee community observing and studying their routine with interactions intended to make them accustomed to human beings’ presence. The hike also takes 2 to 3 hours and on getting to the chimpanzees you can stay up to 4 hours in their presence.

This chimpanzee habituation experience has limited slots and it is therefore advised to book it in advance.

Other Discovery Journeys Birding Destinations

Rwanda has several other birding tour destinations. These include Akagera National Park which is Rwanda’s second most important bird area. It is also East and Central Africa’s largest protected wetland. Akagera’s ecosystem is also diverse with open savanna grasslands and woodlands as well. It is the only place in Rwanda where you can see the shoebill stork.

Nyandungu Eco Park is another Rwanda Birding destination. It is located in Kigali just a few minutes’ drive from the city center. The eco-park is predominantly a wetland that was recently restored after several years of degradation. It now boosts over 200 bird species including the Grey Crowned Cranes. The eco park can easily be accessed and it is the most convenient Rwanda birding destination. It works well for those with limited time in Rwanda.

Beyond Rwanda, Uganda has many Birding safari tour destinations. These include the Mabamba wetlands, Royal Mile, and Semuliki Valley among others. Kenya and Tanzania are also great birding safari destinations. They are the best savanna wildlife safari destinations for Big cats and Mammal experiences.

The Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Sensation

Mountain gorilla trekking highlights Rwanda safari holiday expeditions. Mountain gorillas are Great Apes that live in the forested mountains of the Virunga Conservation Area and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They are among our closest relatives, with over 95% of their DNA similar to humans.

Mountain gorillas live in families headed by a dominant male called Silverback. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda has 12 fully habituated gorilla families open to tourism. The park is the best place to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Hiking the Volcanoes National Park ecosystem is challenging but rewarding. It takes a 1 to 4-hour hike to meet mountain gorillas. You are allowed in the presence of mountain gorillas for an hour. Time limitations and other regulations safeguard mountain gorillas and the people visiting. Our 4-day double gorilla trekking tour features a visit to two families, allowing you to explore more.

Rwanda beyond Gorilla Tours

Beyond gorilla tours, Rwanda safaris offer exclusive encounters with other rare species. The golden monkey trekking experience in the Volcanoes National Park is another epic primate trekking adventure.

Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 primates, including chimpanzees. A Rwanda safari holiday with chimpanzees, mountain gorillas, and golden monkey trekking is highly recommended.

Nyungwe National Park adventures also feature a canopy along East Africa’s highest Canopy walkway. Nyungwe Forest can be independently explored for a thorough Rwanda wildlife tour of one of Africa’s oldest rainforests.

Unique Cultural Experiences

Culture is part and parcel of Rwanda safari holiday adventures. The country offers sustainable and authentic cultural experiences. These involve engaging with the local communities and directly empowering them. A cultural experience at the Nyanza Royal Palace gives insight into the rich Rwandan heritage.

Cultural experiences enhance your safari experience by providing a better understanding of the native people’s values and customs.

Best Time for Rwanda Safaris

The dry season from June to September and December to February is the best time for Rwanda safaris. Minimal rainfall disturbances during these months provide the perfect weather for wildlife viewing and photography.

The green season from October to November and March to May favors lush vegetation, beautifying the landscapes even more. The rains discourage some travelers, and with fewer crowds, it becomes a great time to visit Rwanda on exclusive Discovery Journeys.

A Rwanda safari holiday is, however, doable all year round, with each season offering a unique experience.

Where to Stay

There are several accommodation options suitable for all travelers. Budget lodging options are well-maintained and offer great hospitality services.
