Wildlife in the Ndutu Plains
The Ndutu Plains support an extraordinary abundance of wildlife. However, the region reaches its peak from December through March when the southern Serengeti migration arrives in search of nutrient-rich short grasses.
Each year, approximately two million herbivores move southward from the northern part of Serengeti National Park and the Mara ecosystem to the Ndutu region. The volcanic soils of the plains, enriched by ash deposits from the nearby Oldoinyo Lengai volcano, produce highly nutritious grasses ideal for nursing mothers and newborn calves.
Between late January and early March, an estimated 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day. Within minutes of birth, the calves can stand and walk, and within a few days, they can run alongside the herds. This remarkable adaptation helps them evade predators, although many still fall prey to carnivores.
The abundance of young animals attracts a high concentration of predators, making Ndutu one of the best places in Africa to observe hunting behavior. Common predators include lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, and golden jackals. Other resident wildlife species ensure excellent game viewing even outside the migration season. Notable ones include elephants, giraffes, buffalo, Grant’s Gazelle, Thomson’s Gazelle, elands, warthogs, and several bird species.

Witnessing the Wildebeest Calving Season
The calving season is Ndutu’s signature attraction. You can watch thousands of newborn wildebeest taking their first steps, mothers nursing calves, and predators patiently waiting for an opportunity to hunt.

Game drives
Game drives are the highlight of every safari in Ndutu. One unique advantage of the area is that off-road driving is permitted in many sections. This flexibility allows guides to position vehicles for better wildlife viewing and photography while maintaining a respectful distance from animals.

The alkaline lakes attract large congregations of flamingos and waterbirds, particularly after seasonal rains. Other notable bird species include the Kori Bustard, secretarybird, Grey Crowned Crane, Martial Eagle, and Ostriches.

Getting there
Flying is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Ndutu. There are daily scheduled flights operating from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Mwanza.
Flights land at Ndutu Airstrip, which is only a short drive from most lodges and camps. The flight time from Arusha is approximately one hour, allowing you to get to the conservancy early enough to start your Discovery Journeys expeditions.
Getting to Ndutu by road takes several hours, depending on where you are coming from. It takes about six to seven hours from Arusha, but the journey is scenic and enjoyable. The journey passes through the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Ngorongoro Highlands, traditional Maasai villages, and wildlife-rich sections of the conservation area.
You can combine Ndutu with visits to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire as part of a longer northern Tanzania safari circuit.
Best Time to Visit
December to March is the best time to visit Ndutu. Highlights of visiting during that time include seeing massive herds of migrating wildebeests, thousands of newborn calves, predator encounters, pleasant temperatures, and excellent photography conditions.
The Green season from April to May is lush and vibrant after the long rains. Advantages of visiting Ndutu during that time include fewer safari vehicles, lower accommodation rates, and beautiful scenery for photography. Road conditions may, however, become challenging.
June to November is a quiet period for wildlife viewing in Ndutu. Although the migration would have moved northward, resident wildlife remains abundant. This period is ideal if you are seeking exclusive game drives, bird watching, peaceful safari experiences, and better lodge availability.
