Lake Mburo National Park is located in southwestern Uganda. It stretches from Kiruhura and Mbarara districts covering a land area of 260 square kilometers. Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest savanna national park in Uganda. It is diverse with a rich ecosystem comprising open savanna grasslands, Lakes, Swamps, and dense acacia woodlands.

The park was named after one of its five lakes. It has an extensive swamp network Lake Mburo National Park is famous for its large herds of Zebras, Elands, and diverse birdlife.

Wildlife in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is very diverse despite its small size. It has one of the highest leopard populations in Uganda. Major antelope species in the park include impala, elands, topi, duikers, klipspringers and reedbucks.

Buffaloes, Giraffes, hippos, warthogs, vervet monkeys, and crocodiles are also present in the park.

The park has a vibrant bird life with over 310 species. Its diverse ecosystem makes birding journeys even more enjoyable. The wetland areas are a haven for papyrus specials like the Papyrus Gonolek, Shoebill stork, and the Blue-headed coucal. The park’s acacia woodlands are home to the black-collared barbet and bare-faced go-away bird.

Other notable birds in Lake Mburo National Park include the African finfoot, Grey-Crowned Cranes, Papyrus Yellow warbler, and the Ross’ turaco.

Activities in The Park

Game drives

Game drives are the best ways to explore Lake Mburo National Park on exclusive Discovery Journeys. The park has a high animal concentration and several are sighted on game drives.

Boat cruise safaris are done on Lake Mburo. They offer one an opportunity to explore the aquatic wildlife species and rich bird life.

The Lake has several schools of hippos and crocodiles. Water birds like the African Fish Eagle are also easily spotted on Lake Mburo’s boat safari. Boat cruises are exclusive and ideal for overall wildlife viewing and photography.

Nature Walks

Lake Mburo National Park offers the best-guided walking safaris of all Uganda tour destinations. The presence of a few deadly predators makes the park safe for nature walks as you closely explore the ecosystem.

The walk to the salt lick is very popular as the animals gather around making it easy to spot them. Giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and waterbuck sightings are highlights of the park’s walking safaris.

Horse riding

Lake Mburo National Park is the only protected area in Uganda with horse riding safaris. Horse riding safaris are adventurous and exciting as you explore the park on horseback. Safari animals are less disturbed by horses and get closer giving you better wildlife viewing opportunities.

Horse riding alone is an exciting experience and its more rewarding when done in diverse ecosystem like that of Lake Mburo National Park.

Cycling

Cycling is another adventurous way to explore the Lake Mburo National Park’s ecosystem. The park has well developed trails with cycling sessions lasting up to 3 hours. Cycling keeps one in shape and there is no better place to do that than in an exclusive Uganda safari destination.

Where to Stay

Mihingo Lodge

Mihingo Lodge is perched on a rock outcrop overlooking the Lake Mburo National Park’s wilderness. It has rustic and specious cottages that are self contained each with a viewing deck. The lodges’ infinity pool is captivating and offers a perfct swim in the wild.

The lodges’ cottages are also spacious with incredible views of the surrounding ecosystem. Rwakobo Rock Lodge organizes safari experiences including cycling and Ankole Community visits.

Eagles Nest

Eagles’ Nest is a budget accommodation option with 10 safari tents. The tented Camp is perfectly perched on a high hill overlooking Lake Mburo National Park. Each of the camps tent has its own Veranda with a view of the park. The bathrooms offer a bush-experience with an eco-friendly invention.

Getting there

Lake Mburo National Park is best accessed by road transportation. It takes a 4-hour drive to get to the park from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The park is also situated about a 2-3 hour drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

It can also be accessed when coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park in a 1 to 2-hour drive. Lake Mburo National Park’s location makes it a perfect stop to reduce on the drive distance in between destinations along the western Uganda safari curcuit.

Best time to Visit

The Park can be visited any time of the year. For the best safari experiences we recommend visting during the dry season from June to October and January to March.
