5 Things To Know Before Taking on Tanzania Discovery Journeys

Tanzania Discovery Journeys are the ultimate and classic African adventures everyone wants to be part of. The country has diverse beautiful wild places ranging from open savannas, forested highlands, and Marine Wildlife ecosystems that are home to several wildlife species. Discovery Journeys to Tanzania are mainly nature-based but the country’s rich History, culture, and heritage also make it more desirable.

It is never easy organizing for a Tanzania safari and Discovery Journey. Choosing between the many safari destinations alone is a challenge given the limited time and schedule and going over all the travel logistics does not seem easy either. In this travel guide, we will therefore look at the 5 things you must know before taking on Tanzania Discovery Journeys for your proper guidance.

Bucket List Discovery Journeys Destination

Tanzania is East Africa’s top bucket list destination for savanna wildlife and Beach holidays. Many of the region’s most visited Safari destinations are located in Tanzania. These include Serengeti National Park, Zanzibar, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Nyerere, and Ruaha National Parks.

Northern Tanzania is the most visited of all and this means it gets so busy and lodges get fully booked. Tanzania is among the countries in East Africa with the highest bed capacity but still lodges get fully booked. Some Tanzania Discovery Journeys like the wildebeest migration adventures are often crowded during the peak season. The high tourist numbers in the north do not deny you the ultimate safari experience you paid for.

Southern Tanzania is less crowded when compared to the north and also has some of the largest national parks. These include Nyerere National Park which is the region’s largest protected area. Nyerere which is formally Selous is home to the savanna’s finest wildlife including the rare wild dogs.

Zanzibar Island is fairly popular for honeymooners and some resorts also get fully booked. You should therefore bear all these in mind when in your initial preparation of your Tanzania Discovery Journeys. It guides you on the best destinations to visit depending on your adventure preferences.

Weather Seasons

Tanzania has two weather seasons: the dry and the wet season that directly affect on travel. The dry season spans from June to October and from mid-December to February. During this dry season, there are minimal rainfall disturbances and chances of wildlife viewing are perfect. Wildlife photography is great with a boost from Natural light.

Major game drives and hiking trails are dry during the dry season which makes safari expeditions easily executed. Several animals gather at waterholes and can easily be spotted.

Tanzania Discovery Journeys are also possible during the wet season from March to May and from October to November. These months are best for birding as it is when several bird species are in full plumage. Migratory birds from as far as Europe as also in the region which increases the bird species diversity and viewing. The rains favor the growth of lush vegetation and a steady supply of water. With this, some animal animals do not have to move far and can therefore be easily spotted.

Some lodges close during the wet season and those that remain open discount their rates. If you are on a tight budget and would like to take on Tanzania Discovery Journeys the wet season is ideal.

Tanzania Visa Policy

Tanzania has a friendly visa policy. East African citizens and those coming from countries with a bilateral understanding with Tanzania do not require a visa. Other nationalities have the option of applying for a Tanzanian visa online. The best tourist visa to apply for is a single entry that is valid for 3 months days since many safari tours rarely exceed 30 days.

You are notified by email whether the visa process has been a success or failure. There is also an option of requesting a visa through a Tanzanian Mission or embassy in your home country.

Citizens of the United States of America visiting Tanzania are required to apply for the Multiple entry visa. This costs USD 100 per person and is valid for a year. When applying for these visas you are required to attach supporting documents including a passport with 6 months of validity.

Currency Used

When you travel you naturally spend on Meals, buying souvenirs, and other personal expenditures. The Tanzanian shilling is the country’s national currency that is widely used and commonly accepted. The US dollar, Euros, and pounds are also widely accepted in urban centers and Hotels.

It is however important to exchange some money to the local currency to ease your purchase and transactions. Credit cards are also used but not all facilities have provisions for that even in urban centers.

Tanzania Safari Packing List

Packing the right items for safari is important when taking on Tanzania Discovery Journeys or any other safari adventures. Tanzania lies within the tropics and has incredible weather throughout the year. Even during the wet season the sunshines and you therefore recommended to pack light clothes for your safari.

Some areas in Tanzania like the Ngorongoro Crater have their temperatures drop down during the night. You can always carry a sweater or warm poncho and scarf to keep warm.

You can always have both open and closed shoes. The closed shoes are suitable for hiking and nature walks while the open shoes are ideal for relaxing in. It is recommended to carry extra batteries for the camera since Tanzania Discovery Journeys are a blast and full of photography moments. Mosquito repellants and sunscreen are also good to have a long.

Tanzania is an iconic safari destination and you can explore this and many other epic adventures including Rwanda Gorilla trekking tours.

Best Kenya Safari Tour Activities To Do With Kids

Kenya safari tour activities are remarkable and bring you up close to nature. The country is among the leading safari destinations in East Africa most famous for the Masai Mara wildebeest migration. Kenya just like many other East African safari tour destinations has nature-based safari adventures. These are mainly open savanna experiences and many fear that going on safari with kids might not be safe.

Thankfully, there are many Kenya safari tour activities and Discovery Journeys you can manage to do with kids. Kenya has a few activities that are restrictive to kids if compared to Mountain gorillas and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda which have an age limit of 15 years. Below are our top-pick journeys of Discovery and Kenya safari tour activities we recommend for families with kids.

Nature walks

Kenya is a birthplace of safari.  This becomes a reality when you take on guided nature walks in the different Kenya safari destinations. Kenya has many open savannas with Masai Mara and Amboseli topping the list with the best scenery. Nature walks in such open savannas offer by far the most impressive scenic views and it is only right to have that experience with your kids. These nature walks are done with safety precautions often guided by an armed and experienced ranger.

Destination Kenya has several conservancies with habituated wildlife species including Rhinos. Such personal experiences make us appreciate wildlife and nature. Wildlife species are threatened by habitat loss and poaching. Engaging your kids in personal wildlife experiences is one way of raising their awareness to ensure wildlife conservation. We pledged to climate and wildlife conservation for the sustainability of wildlife for future generations.

Nature walks enable you to see small wildlife species you cannot easily spot when on game drives. They include insects, reptiles, and several vegetation species. Many of these are harmless and are a key factor in drawing kids into the life of safari.

Game Drives

Game drives are typical of any African safari. With the diversity Kenya safari tour destinations have, you are assured of the best on game drives. Game drives in Kenya are done in safe and customized safari vehicles. They are extended and suitable for families and with large windows ideal for wildlife viewing and photography.

Safari game drives are highly recommended and the best Kenya safari tour activities you can take on. With or without kids, game drives are remarkable and enable you to journey with wildlife. The wildebeest migration in Masai Mara is an epic safari adventure you can maximumly enjoy on game drives. It involves millions of wildebeest, hundreds of zebras, the topi, and gazelles. These move over the open savanna ecosystems looking for pasture but in turn, draw the ecosystems’ most deadly predators. Live predator action might be sensitive and not right for kids but still a phenomenon.

Game drives in Amboseli are perfect with the view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli unlike other Kenya open savannas has safari enclaves and offers different exclusive experiences. Such moments witnessed on game drives including up-close experiences with the land’s largest mammals are memorable to the kids. Elephants are the most famous wildlife species among kids. Kenya safari tour adventures with kids in Amboseli are incredible as it is the best safari destination to see elephants.

Kenya Beach Tour Activities

Beach tour activities are open and the most user-friendly Kenya safari tour activities. Kenya has a long coastline of 1,420 kilometers along the Indian Ocean with white sand beaches and marine wildlife. Marine wildlife tours differ from open savanna experiences and bring in the perfect adventure balance. These are monitored and organized with safety precautions making them perfect safari tour activities for kids as well.

Some beach sports activities like Beach soccer and beach volleyball are easy to monitor when done as a family. Water sports activities like Kayaking, diving, and snorkeling are monitored by experts and often have standby rescue teams. One first undergoes basic training and some kids grow up around areas with such water sports amenities. With that in mind, you can always dive into Kenya beach tour activities with your kids without any fear.

The Kenyan coast has a rich history and heritage dating back as early as the 14th Century. It has a vibrant diverse culture of the native East African tribes, Arabs, and early European settlers. Exploring all that is great and among the most recommended Kenya Safari Tour activities with kids.

Boat cruises

Kenya has a Great Lakes and River network that is scenic and home to several wildlife species. Some of these include Hippos, Crocodiles, and birds among others. Safaris featuring boat cruises are also safe and ideal tour activities to do with kids. Lake Naivasha is the most popular Kenya safari destination with boat cruises. The boat cruise on the Lake features a visit to Crescent Island which is iconic with impressive scenery.

Boat cruises along the Kenya Coast are historic and often done in Dhows. These are done to the nearby islands or in the ocean and are pretty exciting. Boat cruises are experiential safari adventures that are ideal for all tourist categories.

Horse Riding

Horse Riding is a new open savanna safari adventure. It is enjoyable and among the best Kenya safari tour activities to do with kids. Horses co-exist with wild animals but are safe in conservancies with more habituated wildlife species. In national parks and reserves, horse riding is organized by lodges that have private land that is home to different wildlife species.

Some of the top Kenya tour destinations that feature horse riding include Lewa Conservancy, Masai Mara National Reserve, and Chyulu Hills.

Cultural Visits

Cultural visits are engaging and among the best Kenya safari tour activities suitable for families with kids. Kenya is culturally diverse with several tribes that have a rich culture and heritage. The Masai are the most common when visiting the Masai Mara and Narok regions. These are believed to be guardians of the Masai Mara ecosystem and have lived alongside the wildlife for years. Northen Kenya is home to Samburu, Pokot and many others. They can be differentiated by their cultural wear.

Kenya’s less-traveled journeys in the Turkana land introduce you to the Turkana people. They are Nilotic and live along the shores of Lake Turkana, the World’s largest desert lake. Turkana people among the most traditional Kenyans and a Kenya cultural tour there takes you back in time. All Kenya cultural visits have provisions for homestay and directly taking part in the home chores. Typical African home chores are not your usual ones and more adventurous and enjoyable. They include hunting in the bushes and herding cattle for cattle-keeping communities. Girls can take part in fruit gathering and food preparation.

Kenya Safari Tour activities never disappoint and offer the ultimate Discovery Journeys. You can always be part of other safari expeditions in the region to Rwanda and Uganda for primate trekking and Tanzania for more open savanna experiences.

Uganda Opens Up New Gorilla Trekking Families. Discovery Journeys

Uganda Opens Up New Gorilla Trekking Families

Uganda recently announced the opening up of new gorilla trekking families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This has come after a four-year gorilla habituation process that is aimed at making gorillas accustomed to human beings in their midst. The opening up of these new gorilla trekking families has increased the number of gorilla permits in Uganda to 194.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has the highest mountain gorilla population of all the gorilla habitats. Its population is estimated at over 450 which is almost half of the remaining mountain gorillas on the entire planet. Bwindi Park has 4 gorilla trekking sectors that are Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija.

The new gorilla trekking families that have been opened up are in Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. They include Binyindo and Muyambi in Buhoma, Rwigi and Tindatine in Rushaga, and Posh in Nkuringo. Mountain gorilla trekking family addition is great news to primate lovers and nature enthusiasts. Remember it is only 8 tourists allowed to trek to a gorilla family a day. An addition of 5 new gorilla trekking families means more chances for more people to trek to these rare primates.

About Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are rare primate species that live in the forested mountains in East and Central Africa. They are endemic to the Virunga Mountains, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the adjacent Sarambwe Forest.

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of Volcanic mountains along the Uganda, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo Border. It comprises 8 dormant Volcanoes shared amongst the three countries. Three mountain gorilla national parks in the Virunga Mountains area form the Virunga Conservation Area. They include Volcanoes National Park Rwanda with the highest mountain gorilla population. It has 20 gorilla families but 12 are the ones currently open for tourism.

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is Africa’s oldest National Park and exclusive gorilla trekking destination. The park has 10 habituated gorilla families but is unfortunately currently closed because of insecurity issues.

Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda is the other mountain gorilla-protected area in the Virunga Massif. It is the smallest of the three and has only one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. The remaining mountain gorillas are in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The opening up of the new gorilla trekking families makes Bwindi the ultimate gorilla trekking destination.

Gorilla Trekking Rules

There are several set gorilla trekking rules and regulations in all the mountain gorilla trekking destinations. These are aimed at the safety of both the mountain gorillas and the visiting guests. Basic rules include following and listening to the ranger guide at all times. This is because the trekking is done on foot in a forested environment. The forests are not just home to the gorillas but many other species including snakes and large mammals that pose a threat to humans in case of any incident.

Littering is strictly prohibited in the forested mountains to ensure habitat protection and conservation. Noise is restricted as it can send a wrong message to the forest inhabitants forcing them to charge at you. Restricted noise is in any form including one from flash photography or excitement after meeting the gorillas.

Individuals below the age of 15 are not allowed to track mountain gorillas. This is because the hike can be strenuous taking up to 4 hours. Such an experience and meeting the gorillas alone does not go right with minors. Only 8 individuals are allowed to trek to a mountain gorilla family a day spending a maximum of one hour in their presence. Uganda has a gorilla habituation experience that has provision for staying up to 4 hours in the presence of the gorillas. Only 4 Mountain Gorilla families are available for this a day and strictly in the southern sector of Bwindi. The new gorilla trekking families are subject to these rules and regulations.

Uganda Gorilla Tours and Safari Packages

There are several Uganda gorilla tours and discovery Journeys you can join to meet the rare mountain gorillas. These start from a 3-day tour and more depending on your preference and convenience. All Uganda gorilla national parks are located in the southwestern part of the country. This can be accessed by road but it is about a 9 to 10-hour drive from Kampala Uganda’s Capital City. To avoid this long drive you can fly to Kihihi Airstrip near the northern sector of Bwindi. From here you can easily connect to Buhoma and Ruhija by road.

If you are up for the gorilla habituation experience or scheduled to track gorillas in the southern sector you can then fly to Kisoro Airstrip. This also serves Mgahinga Gorilla Park which is located in Kisoro District.

Uganda has many other leading safari destinations. You can therefore combine a Uganda safari with these and the gorilla trekking parks. Many of these destinations are open savannas but very diverse and highly recommended. Our 4-day Gorillas and wildlife tour combines a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi. The 7-day gorillas and wildlife safari features a visit to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi National Parks.
