Rwanda Discounts Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permits

Rwanda Discounts Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permits

Rwanda recently announced a discount on Mountain gorilla trekking permits for Africans and East African citizens. This move is aimed at increasing visits within the East Africa and the African continent in general. Mountain gorilla trekking discounts come at a time when the economy and personal finances are gaining momentum after the severe effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This announcement was warmly welcomed by many as Rwanda is a dream tour destination for many. Rwanda is often perceived as high-end and expensive scaring away even its citizens from exploring. With this mountain gorilla trekking permits discount though, Rwandan citizens and other East Africans are to pay the least for the primate adventure. Below is an insight into the discounted Mountain gorilla trekking permits compared to the initial fees.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit Fees

A Rwanda Gorilla trekking permit costs $1500 per person. This is only valid for a day and is most times nonrefundable when one misses the adventure without proper communication. That rate is standard throughout the year irrespective of the season. It is a high amount to pay but worth the experience with one of the world’s most rare primate species.

Mountain gorilla tourism is incorporated into sustainability and community development. Part of that collection is used in mountain gorilla conservation and protection since mountain gorillas are endangered primate species. The other part is directed to community development projects that directly benefit the local people near the gorilla park. When you visit Rwanda for mountain gorilla trekking you therefore contribute to wildlife sustainability and community development.

To cater to an inclusive Rwanda tour experience, the Rwandan government discounted the mountain gorilla trekking permits. It directly benefits East African citizens, Foreign Residents, and African citizens. There are benefits that citizens of any country enjoy compared to non-citizens. Citizens from other East African countries come in because of regional integration and common markets Rwanda has with them. These are now to pay only $200 for the Rwanda gorilla trekking adventure.

Foreign residents working in Rwanda and East Africa have not been forgotten as well. These are to pay $500 per person provided they have proof of a valid work permit and identification. The African continent is also making a move to break barriers and borders for all citizens and Rwanda has led a great example of this. It first announced free visas and access for all Africans followed by discounted permits. Citizens from the rest of Africans who intend to trek gorillas in Rwanda are to pay $500 per person from the $1500 rate. Such an offer opens up more travel opportunities to Africans who avoid travel because of the expenses involved.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience

The mountain gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda is unmatched. It stands out of all primates and wildlife safari experiences because of the connection we have with the gorillas. With about 95% DNA similar to humans, these rare apes are among man’s closest primates. They live in families just like we do with a female reproduction cycle just the same as ours. Mountain gorillas are also rare only limited to the forested mountains in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Trekking to meet gorillas in their most preferred habitats is therefore meaningful to them and us. This experience however starts with securing your mountain gorilla trekking permits. Gorilla trekking is highly demanded and the permits get fully booked as early as 3 months in advance. It is therefore important for you to secure your permits when you have time.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park has 12 fully habituated gorilla families open to tourism. This means only 96 permits are available a day. That is so because only 8 individuals are allowed to trek to one gorilla family a day. After having secured your mountain gorilla trekking permits, you are expected to be at the park headquarters at 7:00 am for a briefing on the day of your scheduled trek. After briefing, you are directed to the forested mountains hiking for 2 to 4 hours until you meet the gorillas. On getting to the gorillas you are allowed to stay for an hour in their presence. It is a must to keep a 7 to 10-meter distance.

On the mountain gorilla trekking tour you get to see other wildlife species in the park. These mostly include birds, other primates, and plant vegetation plus the signature Virunga mountains.

Other Rwanda Adventure experiences

Rwanda is home to other safari adventures including other primate treks like chimpanzees and golden monkeys. Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga mountains and Volcanoes National Park is still ideal for this trekking tour.

Chimpanzee trekking on the other hand is done in Nyungwe National Park. The forested national park is located in southwestern Rwanda and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site because of its diversity and natural value. The park has 3 habituated chimpanzee communities that are open to tourism. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe differs from other destinations because it is done in one of Africa’s oldest forests. There are several other primates here including l’hoest monkeys, colobus, and blue monkeys among others.

In case you are seeking a unique experience other than primate trekking Akagera National Park got you covered. It is the only savanna national park in Rwanda and home to the big five mammals. The park is also East and Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and Rwanda’s second most important bird area. In the open Savannas, you will enjoy game drives and can add a birding excursion and boat cruise along Lake Ihema.

Rwanda Tour Packages

Rwanda tour packages are tailor-made to all Rwanda tour destinations. To start with mountain gorilla trekking tour packages, you can opt for a 1-day gorilla tour. This is most ideal for people with limited time but would love to Visit Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking. You are picked up from Kigali at 4:30 am for a 2-hour transfer to the park to catch up with the briefing. When coming from Gisenyi you can picked up at 5:00 am. If in the Volcanoes National Park area like Musanze then a 6:30 am pick up is okay.

The 2 and 3-day Rwanda Gorilla trekking tour packages are also short and rewarding. For a full exploration of the park, we recommend a 4 or 5-day option with double gorilla trekking and a golden monkey trek.

In 5 days you can also visit Nyungwe for chimpanzee trekking. To add Akagera to your Discovery Journeys adventure, you would need at least 8 to 10 days. Our 10-Day Rwanda safari features all three Rwanda National Parks and is the ultimate Rwanda safari.

Best time to Visit

Rwanda tour adventures are doable all year round. The country lies within the tropics just below the Equator and has a great climatic condition. Rwanda only has two seasons, the wet and dry season. The dry season is the most preferred time to visit. With no or minimal rainfall disturbances, it is easy to take on any safari adventure. This is because most of them especially Mountain gorillas trekking are done on foot.

The dry season spans from June to August and mid-December to February. November, March, April, and May are still great months to visit Rwanda. They are the best birding months are birds are in full plumage. Migratory birds from North Africa and Europe are also present in Rwanda during this time of the year. You are therefore guaranteed never-ending Discovery Journeys anytime you visit Rwanda.

Uganda Birding Tours

Uganda is a great birding destination with over 1100 bird species. These include several endemics and the world’s most sought-after bird species. Uganda has diverse ecosystems that are home to different bird species. These ecosystems include wetlands, open savannas, forested mountains, and water bodies among others. Each of these ecosystems favors the survival of the different birds.

Some of the prominent Uganda birding tour destinations include the Mabamba wetlands. These are located along Lake Victoria World’s second-largest freshwater body. Mabamba has several birds but the prehistoric shoebill stork stands out. It has many other wetland and water birds including the grey crowned cranes, fish eagles, and Egrets among others.

Birding is among the Uganda budget tours that you can opt for. It is truly rewarding and it is often done on Uganda’s leading destinations. Entrance fees on a birding tour are affordable compared to the Primate trekking of chimpanzees and mountain gorillas.

Chimpanzee Trekking Tours

Chimpanzees are the second most visited primates in Uganda after mountain gorillas. They are primates just like humans and share over 98% of DNA similar to us. Chimpanzee trekking tours are remarkable as you trek to meet species you can relate to.

Uganda still has many natural forests with chimpanzees making it the ultimate chimpanzee trekking destination. Visiting any of these forests, however, comes in handy as you have to pay entrance and trekking fees. This is relatively not expensive and it costs $200 in Kibale National Park. East Africans have discounted rates of $30 and Foreign Residents in East Africa also have a discount of $100. The fee is worth the experience as you not only see chimpanzees but also other primates and birds.

Other Chimpanzee trekking destinations include Budongo Forest at $150 per person, Kyambura Gorge Forest at $50, and Kalinzu Forest at $150 per person. In case you fail to afford the gorilla trek you can compensate that with a chimpanzee trekking tour.

Uganda Cultural Tours

Cultural tours are among the most underrated Uganda Tour experiences. The country is among the most culturally diverse countries on the planet. There are over 50 tribes in Uganda Each with a unique culture and heritage. Cultural Tours as life-changing as you connect and bond with the people you meet on tour. These share real-time experiences and tales that make you appreciate the values of humanity.

These tours and experiences are among the Uganda Budget tours you can be part of. You can choose to visit a community on a day excursion spending several hours there. There is an option of homestay that is more inclusive and experiential. On homestay, you actively engage the home related chores interacting with the people there.

Ugandans are hospitable when compared to other nationalities. This is one country where you will get the most genuine smiles and moments of truth. Such experiences and moments are ones everybody desires when they travel. What is most reassuring is that such cultural tours are budget-friendly. Our most recommended cultural tour experiences are to the Batwa and Karamojong communities.

Open Savanna Wildlife Tours

Savanna wildlife tours are the backbone of Safari Adventures and Discovery Journeys. Safari tours to any African country are incomplete without game drives, nature walks, or boat cruises. For a country that is even diverse like the way Uganda is you get a variety of options to choose from.

Uganda’s most prominent savanna wildlife destinations include Murchison Falls National Park, Pian Upe Game Reserve, Kidepo Valley, Queen Elizabeth, and Lake Mburo National Parks. All these are uniquely beautiful with savanna’s major wildlife species. Murchison Falls National Park is bisected by the Nile River on its way up north. The River forms a waterfall that is the strongest on the entire planet. River Nile in Murchison also forms a Delta as it enters Lake Albert. It is also the main water source for safari animals including elephants that walk down the river to take water on a hot day.

Kidepo Valley the country’s most isolated park is exclusive and unmatched. One of the Killers of safari tour adventures is crowds. Now that we are shifting to sustainable and eco-friendly travel one desires an exclusive tour destination like Kidepo. Safari adventures here are remarkably exclusive and most importantly among Uganda Budget Tours. The Parks accessibility could be a challenge because of the long distance but you can save money visiting Kidepo on a 5-day tour compared to a 3-day Rwanda Gorilla Tour.

Mountain Hiking Tours

Mountain Hiking is more adventurous and physically demanding. Uganda Mountain hiking tours are among the most exclusive and Uganda Budget tours. All mountains in Uganda have not been fully explored yet they are a game. They are home to several wildlife species living along the different zones of these highlands.

Lower mountain zones are often covered with montane rainforests. These are home to primates including monkeys, reptiles, and birds. As you climb further you enter the bamboo zones that slowly transcend to heath and Moreland. Some snow-capped mountains like the Rwenzori have glaciers and snow peaks. Other Volcanic mountains have Calderas like Mountain Elgon while others have crater lakes. It is always amazing hiking through wildlife diversity and concluding your hike with incredible beauty and views at the summit. The budget-friendliness is most important as you save reasonably a lot of hiking.

Rwenzori Hikes are highly recommended more than ever as the glaciers are slowly receding due to climate change. This is the right time to book your Rwenzori hike to see the snow-capped mountains along the Equator before the snow disappears for good. You can visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking if you are an African Citizen. The country announced a discount on gorilla permits for Africans from $1500 to $500. The rate for East African citizens is $200 which is fair and budget-friendly. You can also visit Kenya for tour experiences to Amboseli or Masai Mara. Must Do Kenya Tour Activities

Kenya Tour activities are a must for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Kenya is a magical and diverse East African country. It borders Uganda to the west, Tanzania to the south, Ethiopia and South Sudan to the North, and Somalia and the Indian Ocean to the east. The country is a renowned tour destination for all kinds of Tour experiences.

Kenya tour activities vary from nature, cultural, and historic. Kenya is East Africa’s largest economy with a high rate of urbanization. This makes it ideal for city tours and modern tour expeditions. With all that in mind, particular Kenya Signature tour experiences are a must and are highly recommended. It does not matter whether you have explored Kenya before or are a first-timer. Let us briefly look at these top Kenya Tour activities.

Lake Nakuru Birding Tour

Lake Nakuru is a Rift Valley Lake located in Central Kenya. It lies in the middle of the Eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley that starts from Syria. The Lake is a great birding destination with over 400 bird species. Lake Nakuru was initially famous for its large population of flamingos. These however migrated to Lake Bogoria because of an increase in water levels. There are still flamingos on the lake along with other water birds.

Notable birds you can see along the lake include Great white Pelicans, Long-crested eagles, great snipes, and Grey-crowned cranes among others. Lake Nakuru is not just ideal for birding but also for other Kenya Tour activities like game drives. The lake has savanna grasslands and woodlands adjacent to it that are home to three of the Big Five mammals. These include rhinos, buffaloes, and lions. Giraffes, zebras, and hippos are also present in the protected area. Lake Nakuru National Park is the only national park in Kenya with Rothschild giraffes.

Kenya Tour activities to Lake Nakuru are more than birding but an epic African adventure tour. Visiting the lake alone gives you a glimpse of how Kenya is diverse and naturally gifted. You would need to spend at least 2 to 3 nights here to explore the park’s birds and overall wildlife.

Masai Mara Balloon Tour

Masai Mara’s reputation as a Kenya Tour destination precedes it. The reserve is the world’s most desired savanna wildlife destination thanks to its wildlife numbers and diversity. It is located in southern Kenya and together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s finest wildlife ecosystem.

Many Kenya tour activities come to mind when planning to explore Masai Mara. The most prominent and desired is the Great Wildebeest Migration. This mass animal movement features wildebeests, zebras, the topi, and gazelles journeying from Serengeti to Masai Mara. Migrating herds attract the land’s leading predators including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The migrating herds also encounter deadly Nile crocodiles as they cross over the Mara and Grumeti Rivers. Catching up with this mass animal movement is truly remarkable and makes Kenya tour activities to Masai Mara unique.

The Balloon Safari in Masai Mara brings in another exclusive aspect of adventure. Humans are terrestrial beings not capable of flying but on a ballon Safari even we humans get to enjoy the bird’s view of the open savannas. There is no better destination for having such an unforgettable experience than Masai Mara. All the wildlife species and ecosystem setup make Masai Mara the perfect destination for Balloon safaris. We are taking about millions of wildebeests, hundreds of elephant herds, zebras, elands, and most importantly open savannas.

Kenya Tour to Amboseli

Amboseli is Kenya’s next famous destination after Masai Mara. It is unique and outstanding and most preferably our kind of Discovery Journeys destination for epic adventures. Amboseli National Park is the Pearl of Kenya tour activities. The park features all of Kenya’s signature adventures you can ever dream of.

Amboseli is a land of giants and the best Kenyan destination to see elephants. Elephants in Amboseli have long tusks compared to those in destinations like Tsavo National Park. Wildebeests, zebras, lions, buffaloes, and birds including flamingos are present here. Kenya tour activities to Amboseli are even more remarkable with the view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain with a snow-capped peak like the Rwenzori ranges and Mount Kenya. Even though located in Tanzania, the mountain is best viewed from Kenya in Amboseli.

On Kenya tour activities here you can therefore engage in game drives, guided nature walks, photography safaris, and balloon safaris among others. All these experiences offer interrupted views of the several wildlife species and the mountain. For the best of Amboseli safari tours, we recommend a 3 to 4-night stay. Visiting this park alone is good enough for a perfect Kenya safari adventure.

Kenya Coastal Tour

Kenya Coastal Tours is a break from the tiring but fun and adventurous Kenya tour activities. The coast comprises several white-sand beaches and resorts ideal for relaxation and honeymoon tours. Coastal towns more than the beaches have a rich history of East African coastal trade and early settlers. This mostly dates back to the 16th Century and can be witnessed in some areas like Lamu and Mombasa.

Kenya’s coast also has marine wildlife and protected areas that you can visit for a unique wildlife tour experience. They include Watamu and Kisite Mpuguti Marine Parks among others. Kenya is the region’s conservation and sustainability leader as its marine parks were the first in the entire region if not on the continent. They are home to sea wildlife species including sea turtles, dolphins, whales, and countless fish species. A Kenya coastal tour is most recommended to explore such marine life and more ocean adventures.

Other iconic Kenya coast tour adventures include excursions to the Mida Creek in Lamu. The creek is a natural water inlet that is surrounded by mangrove trees and swamp vegetation. It acts as a natural harbor and breeding ground for fish and sea species including crabs. The waters in the creek are calm offering a perfect environment for a swim and Kayaking. Kenya Tour activities to Masai Mara and Amboseli are great but those to Lamu are just incredible.

Samburu off-beaten Tour Paths

All northern Kenya Tour destinations are remote and offer Kenya’s offers beaten path experiences. The region is relatively dry and semi-desert with a different ecosystem from southern and central Kenya destinations. Samburu National Reserve is the most easily accessed and visited of all destinations in the north. The reserve is loved because of its unique wildlife species that do not occur in other Kenya destinations. They include the Oryx Beisa, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebra, and Gerenuk among others.

Samburu is home to such rare species as well as common zebras, lions, cheetahs, and several bird species. Game drives and overall tour activities here are exclusive and intimate. They are ideal for photography safaris because of the little interruptions you get. Samburu National Reserve is traversed by the Ewaso Ngiro River which is also the main water source. The river gets its waters from as far as Mount Kenya and the central highlands. It floods during the wet season cutting off a section of the reserve. Samburu is nevertheless a great Kenya tour destination you Must Visit if you plan a Discovery Journey Up north.

All the above Signature destinations and experiences can be customized. We always recommend an additional visit to Uganda, Rwanda, or Tanzania. Depending on the time you have, you can combine a Uganda budget tour with a Kenya safari to a destination of your choice.

Rwanda Chimpanzee Trekking Tours in Nyungwe Forest. 5-day Rwanda Tour

Rwanda Chimpanzee Trekking Tours in Nyungwe Forest

Rwanda Chimpanzee trekking tours to Nyungwe Forest are the second most desired Rwanda primate trekking adventures. Rwanda is a small but diverse tour destination with the region’s major primate species. These include mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, blue monkeys, and colobus monkeys among others. Primate trekking tours differ from open savanna wildlife adventures since they are done in a forest set up. Such tours are done on foot bringing you up close and personal with wildlife.

Rwanda chimpanzee trekking tours in Nyungwe Forest are exceptional. Nyungwe forest is one of the continent’s oldest and best-preserved forests. It is located in southwestern Rwanda and is home to chimpanzees, l’hoest Monkeys, Colobus monkeys and several other wildlife species. On Rwanda chimpanzee trekking tours to Nyungwe you therefore stand a chance to see these wildlife species and more.

Below is a brief guideline for Rwanda Chimpanzee trekking. We hope it can assist in the planning process of your Rwanda Primate safari and Journeys of Discovery.

About Rwanda Chimpanzees

Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest has one of the remaining populations of Eastern chimpanzees. There are several of these in the park with three habituated communities open to tourism. In the chimpanzee habituation experience, chimpanzees are accustomed to human beings’ presence. With this, you can safely trek through the forests to meet them.

Chimpanzees live in communities of up to 20 individuals and more. They are mobile compared to Mountain gorillas and you are likely required to keep up with them. Chimpanzees are man’s closest primates with over 98% DNA similar to humans. On Rwanda Chimpanzee trekking tours you therefore trek to meet our relatives with many aspects similar to us.

The Rwanda Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

This starts early morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. Rwanda has two chimpanzee trekking areas that include the Uwinka main park headquarters and the Cyamudongo sector. You are expected at the two trekking points for that briefing where you are given the trekking guidelines and regulations.

After the briefing, you are then led to the forest on the most anticipated forest trekking adventure. This experience is chill offering a great connection with Mother Nature. A forest like Nyungwe is an interesting one as you listen to the sounds of birds and insects plus primate calls.

The trekking experience can take up to 4 hours depending on the movement of chimpanzees. It is still a remarkable trek on an off-beaten path and an ultimate Discovery Journeys destination. On meeting the chimpanzees, you are given time to observe, listen, and learn more about them. After this remarkable encounter, you are guided back to park headquarters and later to your lodge or next Rwanda destination.

The Packing list

When going for any adventure you are recommended to pack right and wear the most appropriate outfit. Since chimpanzee trekking is done on foot, you need strong and the best hiking shoes. These enable you to easily maneuver through the muddy trails and protect you from being pierced. Gun boots can work well as they are designed for the jungle. Gaiters are useful as they protect you from safari ants and other small insects that can bite you on the trek.

Hand gloves and long-sleeved shirts and trousers are also highly recommended. Many protruding plants can irritate your skin in case of body contact. Such protective clothes provide the basic safety you need.

Rainfall in the Nyungwe forest is highly unpredictable. It is recommended to have a rain gear with one for your camera for protections against the rains. Extra batteries are essential as you may run out of power with the diverse species there is to capture even on a simple chimpanzee trekking adventure.

Best Time to Visit

Rwanda chimpanzee trekking tours are possible any time of year. For the best experiences and photography, we recommend a visit during the dry season from June to September. During the dry season months, there are minimal rainfall disturbances and you can easily trek through the forest.

There is also an advantage of natural light on a normal sun day. This light is what all nature photographers desire on a photography safari. Chimpanzee photography is not easy because of the high mobility of the chimps. They sometimes hide in tree canopies or move further from trails that are easily accessed on foot. You can only hope for the best natural light and utilize every opportunity to capture these rare primates.

Other Rwanda Primate Trekking Adventures

Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is an obvious one. The park is located in Northwestern Rwanda and has the highest gorilla population in the Virunga Massif. All Rwanda primate trekking adventures feature mountain gorilla trekking and sometimes chimpanzees. On a 5-day, 7-day, and 10-day Rwanda tour options you explore these two primate species and more.

The Golden Monkey trek is also interesting and done in Volcanoes National Park. It is not as popular as chimpanzee and mountain gorilla trekking but remarkable and interesting. We always recommend spicing up your primate treks with this relaxed primate trekking tour.

If you want to mix a primate trek and savanna wildlife then you can add a list to Akagera. It is the only savanna national park in Rwanda and home to the big five mammals and birds. Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve also offers great savanna wildlife experiences. These more than big cats and the big five feature the great wildebeest migration. The great migration happens between Masai Mara and Serengeti ecosystem.  Depending on the season, you can opt to visit Serengeti or Masai Mara. Such combined East African safari adventures are our ultimate Journeys of Discovery.

Masai Mara Discovery Journeys and Exclusive Encounters

Masai Mara Discovery Journeys and Exclusive Encounters

Masai Mara Discovery Journeys are epic of all Kenyan safaris and wildlife encounters. The reserve is located in southern Kenya in the Rift Valley region and it is Kenya’s most visited Safari destination. It is a renowned ecosystem with diverse wildlife species where Kenya tour adventures take place.

Kenya is believed to be the birthplace of safari and Masai Mara Discovery Journeys affirm this. There are several Kenya Signature experiences but those in Masai Mara are iconic. Below are our top and featured Masai Mara Discovery Journeys for those who are considering visiting.

Wildebeest Migration Discovery Journeys

The great wildebeest migration is one of the major mass animal movements on the planet. It is a natural wonder that involves wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and the topi. These herbivores and major grazers move from Serengeti in Northern Tanzania which is adjacent to Kenya’s Masai Mara.

Serengeti and Masai Mara used to be one ecosystem with no boundaries. The region was however divided during the Scramble and Partition for Africa held in Berlin in 1885. Present-day Tanzania went under German rule while Kenya became a British colony. The two colonial masters drew a borderline that saw the separation of communities and ecosystems to Masai Mara and Serengeti.

Animals unlike humans know no borders. They had for hundreds of years traversed this ecosystem following the rains and looking for pastures. These grazers still cross the border annually in the renowned Wildebeest Migration. Migrating herds comprise over a million wildebeest involved as well as hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. The Wildebeest migration is one top Masai Mara Discovery Journeys and adventures you must be part of. It is amazing to see such a huge population of animals in one place.

The Mara River crossings of the migrating herds are iconic. They jump over the steep edges of the River Banks and those that make it through proceed to Masai Mara. No words can describe how a phenomenon the wildebeest migration is. We just recommend you visit Kenya and experience this natural wonder.

Masai Cultural Experiences

Visiting a destination is valuable when you interact and bond with the natives of the area. The Masai are native to and guardians of the Masai Mara ecosystem. They have lived alongside the wildlife species of the Mara ecosystem for years and are the best safari guides. Safari lodges in the reserve have an architectural and interior design inspired by the Masai Culture. They also employ the Masai as site guides conducting guided nature walks and game drives in the reserve.

Masai community visits and cultural experiences are engaging as you directly interact with the people. There are several communities around the reserve with people who still observe and live by their cultural and traditional values. On a visit there, they take you through their Manyatta homestead which has an extended family setup. You get to observe and directly interact with them learning their values and rich heritage.

The Masai cultural experience is among the most authentic Masai Mara Discovery Journeys adventure. They have several handmade crafts that you buy as souvenirs. Money raised from this helps the community generate revenue.  For a more insight and understanding you can have a homestay with an overnight in the Manyatta. You can alternatively opt for a day excursion that is more feasible with the safaria adventures.

Mara Big Cats Safaris

Savanna’s big cats are a major wildlife draw to Masai Mara. The reserve has all three big cats including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. These unlike in other Kenya safari destinations occur in large numbers. It is normal to spot a leopard on a game drive in Masai Mara even though it is solitary in nature.

The lion population surpasses all the other big cats and forms a great part of Masai Mara Discovery Journeys. Lions in Masai Mara move in pride of up to 20 individuals. You can only spot two if it is a mating season or if they have broken away from their Pride.

Cheetahs are impressive to watch and are the ones becoming rare. Masai Mara still has a reasonable population of these but spotting them on game drives is not as common as it is with lions. It is therefore fulfilling to finally meet a cheetah that is also the land’s fastest animal. The Masai Mara ecosystem is an open space and a playground for a fast animal like a cheetah. You will truly have the best of the big cats experience in Masai Mara. Just prepare and visit Kenya for more.

Birding Discovery Journeys

Birding discovery Journeys in Masai Mara are the most underrated Kenya safari experiences. Masai Mara has a rich bird life of all bird species from vultures, scavengers, and herbivore birds. The Vultures and scavengers take advantage of the predator hunts to get a meal. Some vulture birds or prey are aggressive and directly hunt young antelopes.

It is easy to spot the different bird species in Masai Mara. You can do normal game drives featuring these, the big cats, and other safari animals. If you are an avid bird lover, you can dedicate your Masai Mara safari to birding. With this, you can fully explore the bird life in Masai Mara including endemics.

Masai Mara is visited by migratory birds from North Africa and Europe from November to April. These months are a low-and-shoulder tourist season. During this time the number of people on Masai Mara Discovery Journeys is not high compared from June to October. You can therefore enjoy exclusive birding and overall savanna wildlife safaris in the reserve.

Masai Mara Photography Safaris

Wildlife photography has started to be widely appreciated thanks to impressive and iconic safari destinations like Masai Mara. Masai Mara does not just have big cats and wildebeests. It is also home to safari animals like giraffes, dik-dik, hartebeests, elands, and zebras among others. All these animal species offer provision for photography safaris.

Masai Mara has diverse landscapes and ecosystems from open grasslands, rivers, shrubs that are ideal to capture on a photography safari. Capturing these moments and experiences makes Kenya Discovery Journeys exceptional. Some of the best wildlife documentaries were captured here and there is still a chance to cover more.

The best time for photography safaris is in the dry season from June to September. For more exclusive photography sessions and vibrant bird life, it is better to visit from November to May.

Masai Mara is not stand stand-alone Kenya safari destination. You can combine your visit there with other destinations like Amboseli and the Rift Valley Lakes. You can also opt for Rwanda Tour adventures or Uganda safaris depending on your preference. Our Tanzania Travel Guide is extensive and provides insight into destination Tanzania.

The Uganda Safari Giants and Ultimate Wildlife experiences. Discovery Journeys

The Uganda Safari Giants and Ultimate Wildlife experiences

Uganda safari giants are the backbone of savanna wildlife adventures. Uganda is a diverse safari destination offering a wide range of exclusive and experiential safari moments. The country lies in the Great Lakes region and is popularly referred to as the Pearl of Africa. Uganda safari adventures feature several wildlife species but Uganda safari giants are exceptional.

Below the top 5 safari giants you should ensure to add to your Uganda safari adventure and Discovery Journeys.

Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are giant apes that live in the forested mountains of East and Central Africa. They are rare and endangered primate species whose population is still threatened by habitat loss. Mountain gorillas are vegetarian with a bigger percentage of their diet comprising plant vegetation.

A fully-grown mountain gorilla can weigh over 200 pounds making them one of the safari giants in the primate world. Mountain gorillas live in families that are led by a dominant gorilla called silverback. Silverback was derived from the back of an adult male that develops a silver lining as it grows in age. Males fight for dominance and have to maintain their superiority and protect their families if they are to remain heads.

The mountain gorilla population is currently estimated at 1100 in the wild with Uganda having the highest population. There are over 450 mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a protected area and a level of a National Park covering a land area of 331 square kilometers. The park is the ultimate gorilla trekking destination where you can meet with the Uganda safari giant apes.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is another home to Mountain gorillas. It is also located in southwestern Uganda in the Kisoro district and is part of the Virunga massif. This gorilla park has only one gorilla family that offers an incredible Uganda Safari giants experience with the apes. Mountain gorilla trekking is an exclusive primate safari adventure and one of the best Uganda Discovery Journeys you can take.

Elephants

Elephants are the land’s largest mammals and Uganda has them in plenty. They are some of the favorite safari animals of the open savannas’. Elephants often move in herds that are led by a female Matriarch. These safari giants are impressive to watch because of their size alone. Elephants’ noticeable body features include the large ears that they keep flapping to regulate their temperature.

They have protruding tusks that are elongated canine teeth. Elephant tusks are used to forage for food, digging, and sometimes protection against predators. These tusks are however a curse as poachers hunt elephants to take them away. Elephant tusks are commonly known as ivory and are perceived to have great value. There are ongoing sensitization and elephant conservation efforts to ensure the safety of these safari giants.

Uganda savanna wildlife destinations have elephants in large numbers. They include Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley National Parks. All these destinations are unique and offer great wildlife safari experiences with the Uganda safari giants and other wildlife species present. Elephants can easily be spotted on game drives because of their large sizes. They are also sociable and one of the best Uganda safari giants you should always look for.

Hippos

Hippos are the third largest mammals and to differ from elephants they live on both land and water. They are dwarfs compared to other savanna wildlife species but grow in large sizes regardless of their height. Hippos live in groups of up to 20 individuals popularly known as schools. They are some of the finest Uganda safari giants and make Uganda safari experiences more enjoyable.

The Kazinga channel is the best place in Uganda to see Hippos. Kazinga Channel is a water channel that connects Lake Edward and Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The channel has the highest concentration of hippos with its population believed to be the highest in East Africa. There are hippo pools along the Kasenyi sector and in Ishasha the southern sector of the park.

Murchison Falls National Park is another Uganda safari destination where you can see hippos. They graze along the open short grasses before heading to the Nile River waters for relaxation. The Nile Delta area has hippo pools and the River Nile banks also have several of these. Hippos in Murchison can best be spotted while on a boat cruise to the Delta of the bottom of the falls.

Hippos are mainly vegetarian but are some of the deadliest wild animals you can encounter. They are believed to kill more humans than lions and you are therefore required to be cautious when around them. The good thing with their large size they can easily be spotted several meters away.

Rhinos

Rhinos are rare Uganda safari giants that can only be seen at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Uganda is believed to have had a reasonable population of both white and black rhinos that unfortunately went extinct. Uganda currently has only white rhinos that were just reintroduced after extinction. They are 40 in total and there is hope that they will eventually be reintroduced back to the savanna parks.

There are 42 rhinos in Uganda with two at the Uganda Wildlife Educational Center (Entebbe Zoo). Rhinos are the second-largest land mammals and no doubt among Uganda safari giants. They are also part of the Big Five mammals along with elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes. These safari animals were named the big five because they gave trophy hunters a hard time to kill.

Rhino safari adventures in Uganda are enjoyed on foot trekking to where they are. Rhinos have poor sight though with a great sense of smell. They are therefore able to detect you from afar and you are required to keep a distance of at least 15 meters. Rhinos are also sociable and live in groups called a crash. They have a life span of 40 to 50 years and are among the few wildlife species with no predators.

Human beings are the major threats to the survival of rhinos as they poach them to get their horns. The encroachment of the Rhino habitats because of the increase in human population has also led to habitat loss that greatly the survival of these safari giants.

Giraffes

Giraffes, land tallest mammals are our other featured Uganda safari giants. These are very impressive as they majestically tower the open savanna ecosystems. Uganda has the Rothschild’s giraffe species in large numbers. Murchison Falls National Park is the best Uganda safari destination with giraffes. They are mainly concentrated in the northern sector of the park and are easily spotted while on game drives there.

Pian Upe Game Reserve in Northeastern Uganda also has giraffes and other rare wildlife species like the roan antelopes. Giraffes were just reintroduced there in a bid to boost the reserves’ wildlife diversity. Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo National Parks also have reasonable giraffe populations and are great Uganda safari destinations to explore.

The giraffe’s height is iconic and enables it to forage on tree leaves at a reasonable tree height. Giraffes’ long necks enable them to spot danger or look out for feeding opportunities. They also use their long necks to fight and their long legs can kick even some of the savanna’s most feared animals like the lions.

Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tour Adventures. Discovery Journeys

Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tour Adventures

Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tour Adventures to Volcanoes National Park are the best Rwanda Tour experiences. They feature hiking the Misty Virunga Mountains to meet the rare and endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas live in the forested mountains in East and Central Africa and can only be found in three countries on the entire planet. These are Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mountain gorillas are currently among the most sought-after wildlife species. They were listed as critically endangered by the IUCN in the 1980s when their population had drastically reduced. This was due to civil wars, high levels of poaching and habitat encroachment. All these threats still stand but the mountain gorilla population has steadily increased over the years.

Rwanda currently has a gorilla naming ceremony (Kwita Izina) which is a gorilla conservation drive. Kwita Izina’s primary aim is to monitor the growth and survival of all the newly born mountain gorillas. With this naming, it is easy to know what is happening in the lives of these primates as you can easily identify them by name. This and many more experiences make Rwanda Mountain gorilla tour adventures exceptional.

The beauty of Mountain Gorilla Tour Adventures

It is on Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tour adventures that you get to meet one of man’s closest primate species. Gorillas have over 95% DNA similar to humans and share a lot of similarities with us.

They live in families of up to 15 individuals or more. These families have a typical family setting comprising males, females, juveniles, and infant gorillas. Each Gorilla family is led by a dominant male called Silverback who oversees its family safety and mostly determines the day’s routine. For a male gorilla to assume this responsibility it must have defeated any other male gorilla contenders in its group. These can choose to stay and be subordinates or leave to start their own families.

Female mountain Gorillas are caretakers and ensure the wellbeing of the youngness. These just like female humans have monthly menstruation cycles and their gestation period is also 9 months. They breastfeed their young ones and these can stay up to 2 or 3 years under their mothers’ care. On the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Trekking Tour adventures, you will observe and learn about some of these gorilla facts.

It is humbling to look into the eyes of mountain gorillas. This experience is often described as a once in a lifetime and often feels like looking at someone you know. When visiting Rwanda, ensure to visit the Virunga mountains and experience this on your own.

Where to go for gorilla trekking safaris

Gorilla trekking safaris are exclusive to the Virunga Mountains, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the adjacent Sarambwe Reserve. Virunga Mountains comprise a Volcanic Mountain range along the Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC border. There are 10 of these Volcanoes with two active ones; Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira.

The Virunga Mountains area is gazetted into national parks on all sides of the borders. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is the most prominent one and has the highest Mountain gorilla population in the Virunga Mountains. It has 20 habituated gorilla families but only 10 are currently open to tourism.

Virunga National Park is located in DRC and is home to the second-highest gorilla population in the Virunga massif. The Park is however currently closed because of civil wars in the area. Virunga National Park has had a challenge of rebel attacks that have led to the death of many rangers trying to protect the gorillas and their habitats. We can only that peace is restored in this park because it is only that which can guarantee the mountain gorilla survival.

Mgahinga Gorilla Park is the last gorilla park in the Virunga Mountains. It is located in southwestern Uganda and covers Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the other Uganda Gorilla Trekking destination. This has a different ecosystem from the Virunga mountains and is currently one with the highest gorilla population of all the gorilla parks.

Planning your gorilla trekking safari

Planning your gorilla trekking safari is important. This is primarily because there are limited gorilla trekking permits a day. Only 8 tourists are allowed to trek to a mountain gorilla family in all the trekking destinations. This is aimed at protecting the mountain gorillas and their ecosystem.

With the high demand for Rwanda Mountain Gorilla trekking tour adventures, you are highly recommended to book your Safari months in advance. The peak tourist season months in Rwanda are very competitive as gorilla permits get fully booked a couple of months before. This peak season starts from June to September and from mid-December to February. If you plan to visit Rwanda in any of these months ensure to double check gorilla permit availability.

What to expect during a gorilla trekking safari

The Mountain gorilla trekking activity starts early morning. You are expected to be at the park headquarters by 7:00 am for a briefing about the trekking regulations. It is here where you are also allocated to a gorilla family you are to trek to and your head ranger guide.

After the briefing, you are then led to the forested mountains amidst sightings of other wildlife species. The trek takes 1 to 4 hours depending on the movement of the mountain gorillas. It is you to trek to the gorillas and keep up with their pace of the day. Some gorilla families can be got after longer hours of hiking but it is still adventurous and remarkable.

On getting to the gorillas, you can only stay in their presence for an hour keeping a distance of 7 to 10 meters. During this time you get to observe and learn more about these apes. Photography is possible but flash photography is strictly not allowed. This is to avoid irritating the gorillas as they can easily charge at you in defense.

Other wildlife encounters on gorilla trekking safaris

Rwanda offers many other wildlife encounters. These include chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest in southwestern Rwanda. The park is home to many other primates including L’hoest monkeys, blue monkeys, Vervet monkeys, grey-checked Mangabeys, and red-tailed monkeys among others. Nyungwe is also Rwanda’s most important birding area because of its bird diversity and the number of endemics. It is therefore best for primates and birding encounters.

For savanna wildlife and journeys with the Big Five mammals, Akagera National Park got you covered. Akagera is the only savanna national park in Rwanda and thankfully has all that you would desire to see in an open savanna park. It is also diverse with various ecosystems including swamps where you can spot several bird species.
