Mountain gorilla in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. Uganda gorilla trekking adventures.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Adventures

Uganda Gorilla trekking adventures currently surpasses any form of wildlife safari adventures in Uganda. This landlocked East African country has the highest population of the remaining mountain gorillas. The total mountain gorilla population is currently estimated at 1100 individuals in the wild and Uganda has half of these.

Mountain gorillas are primates that live in the forested mountains in East and Central Africa. On the entire planet, mountain gorillas can only be found in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They even particularly live in the Virunga massif, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the Sarwambe Reserve.

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of Volcanic Mountains along the Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC border. Uganda has three of the 8 Virunga mountains though shared with her neighbors. It is in these mountains that you find mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is also in southwestern Uganda and Uganda gorilla trekking adventures here are very enjoyable.

Mgahinga Gorilla national park is the extension of the Virunga conservation area to Uganda. The three Virunga mountains in Uganda are protected in this national park. Mgahinga gorilla park however only has one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. This family initially used to cross over the border to Rwanda but eventually stabilized.

Uganda gorilla trekking adventures in Mgahinga gorilla park are very exclusive. The fact that only 8 people are allowed to track one mountain gorilla family a day means it is only 8 people who track this gorilla family. With this, you enjoy exclusive guided adventures in the Virunga mountains sighting other wildlife species there.

Gorilla trekking adventures here are also recommended for those interested in a similar experience as Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. The relief and vegetation type is the same in the Virunga massif and you get therefore get the same experience you would have in Rwanda and Virunga National Park.

Our 4 Days Mgahinga Gorilla Tour is the ideal one to fully explore the park. This features mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking. In case you would like to explore more you can add on a few days and also hike the mountains and other adventure activities in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.

This is the most famous Uganda gorilla trekking destination. To differ from the Virunga conservation area, Bwindi impenetrable National Park just like its name is covered with a tropical rainforest. The park is also hilly, unlike the Virunga mountains which have just one stand-alone mountain ranges.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 4 main gorilla trekking sectors each with habituated gorilla families. It is therefore advisable to book accommodation in the particular sector where you will be tracking as they are several distances apart and on the day of the gorilla trekking adventure you are expected at the sector’s park headquarters by 7:00 for a briefing.

This park having many gorilla families makes it the prime Uganda gorilla trekking destination. Gorilla trekking is however the most demanded primate activity and gorilla permits get fully booked. It is therefore advisable to book in advance to avoid missing out.

Our major Uganda gorilla trekking adventures feature Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They are however combined with other leading destinations in Uganda like Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking. The 7 Days Uganda Wildlife Safari is an example of this and the recommended ultimate primate trekking adventure. You can also do 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys adventure visiting savanna national parks for the big five mammals and more.

Explore Uganda with us on mountain gorilla trekking adventures for one on one moments with mountain gorillas and other exclusive safari moments.

Best time To Visit

The dry months from June to September and from December to March are the best and most recommended for gorilla trekking adventures. This is because mountain gorilla trekking is done on foot and on rainy days the trails are slippery. It is however still possible to track mountain gorillas in the wet season.

With the terrain and vegetation cover in the region, rainfall is very unpredictable. We therefore always share a packing list with our guests outlining what to wear for the gorilla trekking adventure. The raincoat is a Must. Waterproof pants are also highly recommended as well as long-sleeved shirts and hand gloves.

Other Uganda Safari Adventures

Uganda offers other incredible safari adventures. They include chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park the primate capital of the world. It is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species making it an incredible Uganda primate trekking destination.

You can also opt for savanna wildlife experiences in the Murchison Falls National Park. The park has four of the big five mammals and offers boat cruise adventures along the Nile River. These and many more Uganda safari adventures can be combined into an extensive Uganda safari of up to 12 days. In case you do not have that much time you can opt for a 7-day Uganda primate trekking safari. All our itineraries are custom-made and can be further adjusted accordingly.

We also feature birding safaris to the different birding destinations in Uganda. Some of our featured Uganda birding destinations include the Mabamba Bay, The Royal Mile, and Mubwindi Swamp among others.

We focus on experiential tourism and we will ensure you get the best out of your gorilla trekking and overall safari adventures. Contact us for more. You can also visit Rwanda for a gorilla trekking safari in Volcanoes National Park or Visit Kenya and Tanzania for savanna wildlife safaris.

Hippos in Nyerere National Park. Southern Tanzania Safari experiences

The Best of Southern Tanzania Safari Experiences

Southern Tanzania Safari experiences are not as popular as those in the northern circuit but incredible and highly recommended. The Tanzanian remote south is less explored despite its diversity and offers exclusive and experiential encounters.

Tanzania is a renowned safari destination because of the wildebeest migration experiences in Serengeti National Park. Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater are also an iconic attractions with lots of wildlife. All these are however situated in Northern Tanzania. Northern Tanzania safari destinations feature on lists of many adventure lovers and have been fully explored.

The southern Tanzania Safari destinations on the other hand largely remain less explored yet very remarkable. At Discovery Journeys we take on less traveled paths to exclusive destinations like southern Tanzania. Our core value is to explore and discover more featuring experiential wildlife and cultural safari activities. Below are some of the most recommended Southern Tanzania Safari experiences and destinations most of which we feature.

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is Tanzania’s and East Africa’s largest National Park. The park is located in southeastern Tanzania and covers a land area of 30,893 square kilometers.

Nyerere National Park is diverse with varying ecosystems that are home to different wildlife species. It is from this rich biodiversity that the reserve was listed as a world heritage site.  The park is ideal for classic African safari experiences and offers the best of Tanzania wildlife.

All the big five mammals are present here even though black rhinos and leopards are rarely seen. Other notable safari animals in the park include giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, and lions among others. Nyerere National Park is home to over 440 bird species. Some of the common birds you can see on a birding safari here include the white-fronted bee-eater, African spoonbill, spur-winged lapwing, African skimmer, and the Yellow-billed stork among others.

Game drives, nature walks, balloon safaris, photography safaris, and cultural visits are the activities you can engage in while on southern Tanzania Safari expeditions in Nyerere National Park.

Mikumi National Park Expeditions

Mikumi National Park is also located in southeastern Tanzania. With a land area of 3,230 square kilometers, Mikumi is the fourth-largest National park in Tanzania. The park just like other Tanzania destinations is home to several wildlife species including four of the big five mammals.

Unlike other southern Tanzania safari destinations, Mikumi National Park can easily be accessed by road from Dar es Salaam. It is a great destination to explore with limited time in Tanzania but would love to enjoy an African Safari.

Elephants are common here and often seen in large herds grazing the open savanna areas. Wildebeests, zebras, and buffaloes are also among the commonly seen wildlife species in Mikumi National Park. Mikumi is home to over 400 bird species making it one of Tanzania’s finest birding destinations.

The park is ideal for all types of savanna wildlife safari experiences. It also acts as a gateway to all southern Tanzania safari expeditions as itineraries down south go through the park. Our 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari features safari experiences in Mikumi and is one of our best Tanzania safari adventures.

Fishing Safari experiences

Sport fishing is among the adventurous safari activities that have not been fully explored. Southern Tanzania allows you to have fishing safari experiences along the River and lake networks in the area.

Major fishing expeditions are done along the River Rufigi, Kilombero, Mnyera & Ruhudji rivers. The Tanzanian Blue Tigerfish is the most sought-after in this area but there are other fish species you can capture. The Tilapia, Vundu, Yellowfish (Labeobarbus), Zambezi Parrotfish, and African mottled Eel are other highly anticipated fish species for a catch while in the region.

On fishing Safari experiences in southern Tanzania, you get to go on safari game drives in the park. Here you see leading savanna animals and birds and enjoy the scenic views of the beautiful landscapes.

The best time for fishing expeditions in the south is in the dry season from June to September. December to March is also a great time to visit. During the wet season especially in November, April, and May the rain fall disrupts activities, and some roads become muddy and impassable. You can book our 5-day Tanzania Fishing safari and enjoy one of the greatest southern Tanzania safari experiences.

Ruaha is another outstanding national park in southern Tanzania. It is among the largest protected areas in the country covering a land area of about 20,226 square kilometers. Ruaha is the true African wilderness that is largely less explored compared to counterpart destinations like Serengeti National Park.

The park’s size gives it an advantage in wildlife numbers and diverse ecosystems in general. Baobab trees are pretty outstanding and some of the longest-surviving plant species on the planet. These combined with open savanna vegetation give impressive scenic views while on safari in Ruaha.

The addition of the safari animals makes Ruaha safaris unmatched and incomparable. Ruaha National Park is most famous for its large herds of elephants but lions are also seen in pride of up to 15 individuals. Zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, and hippos are present and you surely see them while on safari. The African wild dogs are also present here and among the key attractions.

You can take on Discovery Journeys and Tanzania Safaris to Ruaha any time of the year. For the best safari experiences, however, it is better to visit during the dry season.

Join our other wildlife safaris in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and DRC. These feature gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, Big Five Savanna Wildlife Safaris, and much more staying at exclusive safari lodges.

Mountain Gorillas. Virunga National Park Safaris and adventures.

The Future of Virunga National Park Safaris

Virunga National Park safaris and adventures were exclusive experiences travelers would look out for back in the day. The park is part of the Virunga mountains a chain of volcanic mountains along the Uganda, Rwanda and DRC border. Unfortunately, Virunga National Park has been closed because of insecurity and we are not sure when it will open again.

The Park is Africa’s oldest national park located in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers a land area of 7,768 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems. The Virunga National Park ecosystem ranges from the Volcanic mountains, open savannas, wetlands, tropical rainforest, and much more. All these ecosystems are home to various wildlife species that still make Virunga National Park Safaris truly remarkable.

Virunga National Park was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 because of its diversity. Virunga National Park safaris have never been easily executed because of security threats. Park rangers are often attacked and killed by rebels as they patrol this vast park. Because of this instability, several illegal activities including poaching and the park’s land encroachment have not been prevented.

Many wonder about the future of wildlife and safari experiences in Virunga and the Democratic Republic of Congo in general. The only good news is that Kahuzi Biega National Park in southern Kivu is open for lowland gorilla trekking adventures. Let us look at some of the key attractions that make Virunga National Park Safaris unique and enjoyable.

Virunga National Park is one of the few places in the region with mountain gorillas. The park has eight of the ten Virunga Mountains and it is in these mountains where mountain gorillas Live. 10 habituated mountain gorilla families in the park were open to tourism by the time of its closure. We can only hope that the park will open again with the same or more trekking opportunities.

Unlike the mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda and Rwanda, trekking in Virunga National Park is exclusive. This is because a few people dare to go to Congo because of the underlying security issues. This in turn enables wildlife enthusiasts who make it to get maximum time and exclusivity while with the gorillas.

Mount Nyiragongo

Mount Nyiragongo is among the active Volcanic Mountains in Virunga National Park. The mountain despite its volcanic action was open for tourism as adventure lovers would hike to the summit to see the lava lake.

Mount Nyiragongo has cabins on the summit edges where you can have accommodation on the 2-day mountain hike. The best time to see the lava lake was in the night and early morning necessitating an overnight in the mountain. Mountain Nyiragongo Hike is rewarding as one would get to see several wildlife including birds while hiking through the layer of the forest at the mountain base.

The mountain ascent would even be better with views of the Rift Valley graben and some lakes including Lake Kivu. The adventure climax of the Nyiragongo hike is the much-awaited Lava lake giving one a glimpse of active Volcanicity.

All these ended in 2021 when the mountain erupted leaving at least 32 people dead. The death resulted from the panic of evacuating the area. Lava from the mountain spread reaching as far as Goma City. With this, people had to be evacuated quickly for their safety. There was an electricity shutdown because the eruption disrupted the electric wiring system.

Tchegera Island

Tchagera Island is situated on Lake Kivu.  It is crescent-shaped and believed to be the summit of a dormant volcano. At the moment it is the only place accessible of all the leading Virunga National Park destinations. Visiting Tchegera Island allows one to enjoy safari experiences on Lake Kivu.

A visit here features several water activities including Kayaking, swimming, and canoe riding among others. The island is covered with lush green vegetation and forests that are home to birds and some primates. Here one can enjoy guided nature walks, birding adventures, and a little bit of primate watching.

Tchegera Island is a gateway to the Virunga Safari adventures and the fact that it is open makes us feel better. While on the island you can catch a glimpse of some of the Mountains, especially Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira.

Hope for Virunga

There is a team of rangers who still monitor the mountain gorillas despite the security challenges they face. We are opportunistic that the mountain gorillas are well protected since they are endangered. The daily life of the mountain gorillas continues though as they thrive and even give birth.

In regards to Mount Nyiragongo, a team of experts from Goma Volcanic Observatory still monitor the mountain. We hope that Nyiragongo hiking will eventually be opened up for tourism as many would love to see live Volcanic action.

The Discovery Journeys team has ever greatly explored the Congo and we also keep monitoring the situation. We have several sample Congo safari Itineraries like the 5-Day Great Apes Virunga Adventure. The 6-day Virunga Classic safari is another great one with a provision for two gorilla treks and Mount Nyiragongo Hike. Once the park opens, we will curate more tailor-made itineraries to fully uncover the hidden treasures in the Congo. These will be done alongside other exclusive adventures in Uganda and Rwanda.

Other Congo Safaris

DR Congo has other safari destinations affected by the insecurity in the country. A case in point is Kahuzi Biega National Park located in the southern Kivu province. The park is home to Eastern Lowland Gorillas, birds and other mammals species. It is the only destination where you can see eastern lowland gorillas in the wild.

Kahuzi Biega National Parks operations have not been affected like Virunga National Park. You can therefore visit for lowland gorilla trekking and habituation experience.

Near Kahuzi Biega is the Lwiro Sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees, birds and other primate species. Lwiro can be visited after a lowland gorilla adventure in Kahuzi Biega.

Kwita Izina 2023 is scheduled for 1st September. The gorilla naming ceremony

Kwita Izina 2023 To Be Held On 1st September

The Kwita Izina 2023 edition is here and it is scheduled to be held on 1st September as Rwanda names baby mountain gorillas. Kwita Izina is a Mountain gorilla naming ceremony. It was adapted from the Rwandan tradition of naming newborns in the presence of family and friends. Mountain gorillas have over 95% DNA similar to humans and are among man’s closest relatives. With this connection, the Kwita Izina makes more sense for those who could be wondering why gorilla naming is important.

The first edition of Kwita Izina was held in 2005. It was aimed to acknowledge the value of the gorillas and celebrate the conservation journey the country has been through. Kwita Izina 2023 edition will be yet another milestone of mountain gorilla conservation. The event will also be used as an opportunity to thank the vibrant Rwandan community around Volcanoes National Park. The community is involved in mountain gorilla conservation and their recognition is vital for the park’s sustainability. Some of the people directly involved in mountain gorilla conservation include Ranger guides, trackers, and Veterinary doctors.

This Kwita Izina 2023 will be held in Kinigi Musanze at the gorilla naming grounds near Volcanoes National Park.

Mountain gorillas are primates that live in the forested mountains of East and Central Africa. There are four gorilla subspecies including the Eastern Mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas, cross-river gorillas, and western lowland gorillas. Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest of all and endemic to Kahuzi Biega National Park in eastern DRC.

Mountain gorillas live in the Virunga mountains, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, and the adjacent Sarambwe Game Reserve. Mountain gorillas are among endangered primate species and their population is still threatened. Their population is estimated at 1063 in the wild with Bwindi Impenetrable forest having the highest number of over 450 gorillas.

The rest of the population is shared in the Virunga mountains with Rwanda having the highest number. Rwanda has Five of the Virunga Mountains which include Mount Bisoke, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Two of these mountains (Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke) are along the Rwanda Democratic Republic of Congo Border. Mount Sabyinyo is shared by the three countries while the other two (Mount Muhabura and Mount Gahinga) are along the Rwanda Uganda Border. The mountain gorilla trekking parks in the Virunga Massif include Virunga National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Mgahinga gorilla park.

Significance of Kwita Izina 2023

The mountain gorilla population in the region was greatly threatened by civil wars and uncontrolled poaching. This had seen the population reduction of these rare apes to about 200 individuals in the 1990s. With this, a lot had to be done to ensure habitat protection and foster the continued survival and conservation of the mountain gorillas.

Key players came on board including prominent people like Dian Fossey. This Kwita Izina 2023 being the 19th Edition is a continuation of the conservation efforts over the years. Each mountain gorilla that is born in Volcanoes National Park is monitored and naming them even makes it more greater. We cannot rule out the great care infant mountain gorillas get from their mothers and how they bond naturally. Human activity though especially tourism is a game changer in wildlife conservation. This is why Kwita Izina 2023 is important just like the previous gorilla naming editions.

Mountain gorillas are currently the most sought-after primate species. Trekking the Virunga Mountains to see mountain gorillas in their most preferred habitats is very remarkable. The mountain gorilla trekking adventures start with a briefing at the park headquarters. Here you are told about the do’s and don’ts while in the forest, and the presence of the mountain gorillas.

After the briefing, you are then guided on a trek amidst seeing various wildlife species including birds. The scenery of the Virunga Mountains is enjoyable and very impressive. It takes 2 to 4 hours or more to trek to the gorillas depending on their movement. Once you get to them, you keep a distance of 7 meters observing and learning more about the gorillas.

Flash photography is strictly not allowed as it can irritate the gorillas. You are also expected not to make noise in the presence of the gorillas and recognize and respect the presence of the Silverback – the mountain gorilla family head.

Chimpanzees have the capability to stand and walk upright but prefer to walk on all four (Legs and hands). The chimpanzee diet is comprised of a variety of options and they are not pure vegetarian as counterpart gorilla species. You can opt for the chimpanzee habituation experience if you are interested in spending more time with the chimpanzees. This gives you more time and you start early following the routine of the chimpanzees.

Kyambura Gorge Forest

Kyambura Gorge Forest is located in Queen Elizabeth National Park in the Kichwamba area. This forest is an underground one in the gorge that covers about 11 kilometers. It is dissected by River Kyambura links to the Kazinga channel. The gorge is a unique place to see chimpanzees and one of the best Uganda chimpanzee trekking destinations.

The view of the forest and the gorge is breathtaking and it gets better when you hike down the river and the forest trails. Kyambura Gorge is not just home to chimpanzees but also other primates including red-tailed monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, and colobus monkeys.

The chimpanzee numbers here are minimal compared to Kibale National Park but you still enjoy exclusive primate trekking experiences.

Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu forest is another important Uganda chimpanzee trekking destination. It is located in Bushenyi and covers a land area of 137 square Kilometers. The forest is home to chimpanzees and many other primates and birds.

Chimpanzee trekking here is reliable and exclusive as few people visit the forest compared to Kibale. The forest can be accessed via Kichwamba when coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park. We, therefore, recommend people who intend to trek chimpanzees here stay in the Kichwamba area ahead of the adventure. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to Kalizu forest. The chimpanzee trekking experience here also starts with a briefing after which you are guided for the trek.

The other notable primates here include blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and Vervet monkeys among others. Adventures here are complemented by savanna wildlife experiences in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest is located in mid-western Uganda in Kiryandongo District. It covers a land area of 435 square kilometers that is mainly made up of tropical rainforests. The forest is strategically located on the way to Murchison Falls National Park and is also home to chimpanzees. Budongo is home to several other wildlife species including birds, mammals among others.

This forest is among Uganda’s underrated and less explored primate destinations yet exclusive and offers remarkable primate trekking experiences. On-foot chimpanzee trekking is the main activity done here and it is truly remarkable and rewarding. You can have an overnight at the accommodation facility nearby and have a chimpanzee trek the following day. From there proceed to Murchison Falls National Park for savanna wildlife experiences and a boat cruise along the Nile.

Uganda chimpanzee trekking adventures are fun if Budongo forest primate expeditions are fully incorporated into the itineraries.

Bugoma Forest

Bugoma forest is located in Hoima in western Uganda. It is among the greatly threatened natural forests in Uganda facing deforestation as some people are trying to create land for a sugar plantation. The forest just like the others is home to a number of wildlife species with about 23 mammal species including chimpanzees, over 200 bird species, butterflies, and amphibians among others.

Even though Bugoma forest is not a popular chimpanzee trekking destination, it has a reasonable number of chimpanzees that need to be conserved and protected. The chimpanzee trekking activity that goes on here is limited but very enjoyable as it is exclusive.

A lot of conservation efforts are in place to ensure the limited destruction of the forest which also means the continued survival of all the wildlife species here including chimpanzees.

At Discovery Journeys we aim at conservation and all our safaris are eco-friendly always advocating for the protection of nature and culture. You can be part of these and explore these leading Uganda chimpanzee trekking destinations for a better understanding of nature and the numerous species therein.

Our Chimpanzee Trekking Tours

Our major Primate Discovery Journeys in Uganda feature chimpanzee trekking. The 7 Days Uganda Safari is ideal but 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys Adventure is even greater with leading savanna wildlife destinations like Murchison Falls National Park.

Other primate Discovery Journeys feature mountain gorilla trekking. This can be done in Uganda or Rwanda depending on your preference. You can opt for a 3-day Uganda Habituation tour for more time in the presence of the gorillas.

Fishing Safaris

Tanzania fishing safaris are not your usual African safari experience. These are done in the wild Southern, less explored part of Tanzania. Southern Tanzania has several water bodies ideal for fishing safaris including Kilombero River. Other nearby areas famous for fishing include the Mnyera & Ruhudji rivers. Fishing excursions here are done in different types of waters that range from streams, straights, and waterfalls.

There are about 15 fish species here including the Tanzanian Blue Tiger Fish which is considered to be the hardest-fighting freshwater game fish. On fishing safaris in the south, you get to explore Nyerere National Park which is currently Tanzania’s largest protected area. The park is home to several wildlife species including the African dog, elephants, lions, elands, buffaloes, birds and so much more.

Nyerere National Park is among the least explored wild places in Tanzania and safaris here are truly exclusive and remarkable. There are limited accommodation options here which is why it is important to book your luxury safari Journeys ahead of time especially when you intend to visit during the peak tourist season.

Balloon Safaris

Ballon Safaris offer a panoramic view of the ecosystem and they are now among the top Tanzania Luxury safari experiences you must do. Ballon safaris are arranged in the different Tanzania safari destinations and they give you the bird’s view. They are more enjoyable in open plains like in Serengeti National Park especially during the great wildebeest migration.

Balloon safaris are often organized early mornings when the winds are calm. Animals are active during this time of the day and you can also catch up with early risers.  Early morning hours are also ideal to catch up with the sunrise above the horizon. While visiting Tanzania ensure to have a balloon safari experience and tick it off your bucket list.

Beach Holidays

The true definition of a luxury safari is crowned by a beach holiday and Tanzania got you covered. Ironman Triathlon Rwanda Edition. Discovery Journeys

What To Know About Rwanda The Host of Ironman 70.3 Edition

Rwanda is scheduled to host the Ironman Triathlon this year. Ironman Triathlon is a series of long-distance multi-sport races that comprise cycling, swimming, and running various distances. Races start at 7:00 am lasting for about 16 to 17.  Participants are expected to have completed their race of the different activities they are competing for during that time.

The cut-off time for the swimming competition for example is 2 hours 20 minutes covering 3.86 kilometers. Participants have transition cut-off times. The whole race and competition has to fall within 16 to 17 hours from the time athletes’ begin. Those who successfully make it and finish within that time frame are designated Ironmen.

Ironman Triathlon started in the late 1970s. There was a debate about whom among the runners, swimmers and cyclists is more fit. With this, then U.S. Commander John Collins suggested that there should be a race combining all three major competitions. The winner of any race within a particular time was to be given the title Ironman.

Gordon Haller was the first person to win the title having finished his race within 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds. The competition gained attention since then as more participants from all over the world showed interest.

Ironman Triathlon Today

The Ironman Triathlon competition is still vibrant and even more popular today. Its format and organization have not changed and it is now organized in different parts of the world. Hawaii is the pioneer place where the first Ironman Triathlon took place. The Hawaiian competition is much honored and regarded as the most prestigious of all.

Rwanda is the first African country to host the Ironman triathlon event. It is scheduled to place on the 5th of August. It will be a qualification competition for the 2024 VinFast Ironman 70.3 World Championships slated for the 14th & 15th of December 2024.

Congo Wildlife Safaris

Democratic Republic of Congo Wildlife Safaris Beyond The Gorillas

Democratic Republic of Congo Wildlife Safaris are gaining momentum even though the country is not a famous safari destination. The country is diverse and less explored because of insecurity. DR Congo has long battled with insecurity issues, especially in the Eastern part hindering tourism activity. Just like Uganda and Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo wildlife safaris mainly feature gorilla trekking. Congo has two gorilla species that are Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park and Mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park.

Eastern Lowland Gorillas are endemic to the Congo forests of Mount Kahuzi and Biega. On a visit there you can participate in the normal lowland gorilla trekking experience or the lowland gorilla habituation experience. The Mountain gorillas on the other hand live in Virunga National Park and the Sarambwe Reserve.

Virunga National Park is one of the biggest protected areas in the region with diverse ecosystems. These range from Volcanic Mountains, tropical rainforests, swamps, open savanna plains, and much more. Mountain gorillas in the park are mainly in the Virunga mountains which include Mount Mikeno, Mount Bisoke, and Mount Sabyinyo. Virunga National Park was unfortunately closed because of insecurity and will only be opened if it is safe again for public visits.

All these species can be seen in the different ecosystems that the country has including forests, swamps, and the savannas.

Our birding Discovery Journeys to Congo can be arranged separately for people with a lot of interest in birds. You can also however do birding excursions while on the usual primates and mountain hiking expeditions.

The Lwiro Sanctuary is a rehabilitation center for primates located in the southern Kivu region. It is located about 4 Kilometers from Kahuzi Biega National Park and can be easily accessed by road from Bukavu. The center was primarily established to cater to orphaned chimpanzees. It has however grown to become a host of several primates and birds that are mainly rescued from poachers and animal traffickers.

Lwiro Sanctuary currently has 112 chimpanzees, and 16 monkey species totaling 109 individuals. Apart from rescuing and rehabilitation the primates, the sanctuary also reintroduces confiscated wildlife, does research programs and activities related to wildlife, undertake community development projects to empower the people around, and is involved in local tourism.

When visiting the sanctuary on Congo Wildlife Safaris you can therefore engage in a number of activities. Independent visits here are equally great if you want to know more about the conservation journey and the primates at the sanctuary. All our lowland gorilla trekking tour packages to Kahuzi Biega feature a brief visit to this sanctuary.
