Lake Nakuru is situated on the floor of the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley south of Nakuru. Migratory birds are present in the park from November to May. These come from as far as Europe and boost birding excursions. Nairobi National Park’s location makes it easily accessible and convenient to visit travelers with a tight schedule. You can visit the park for a half or full day from Nairobi and get to see the different wildlife.

Notable animal species you can see on game drives in the park include zebras, lions, giraffes, wildebeest, and hyenas. While on a short stay in Nairobi book a birding tour to the park and enjoy the true African wilderness within the city.

The area’s climate is generally hot (semi-arid) but still has diverse ecosystems that are home to various bird species. Guineafowls, pigeons, ostriches, and Greyish eagle owls are among the birds you can see on a birding tour in Lake Baringo.

Amboseli National Park

Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking Adventures with Discovery Journeys

Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking Adventures

Uganda chimpanzee trekking adventures are Great Ape experiences that allow you to meet man’s closest primates. Chimpanzees are primates that live in East and West African tropical rainforests. They have over 98.7 percent DNA similar to humans which makes them man’s closest primates. Chimpanzees live in communities of up to 20 individuals that are led by a dominant male and are very mobile.

Chimpanzees have the capability to stand and walk upright but prefer to walk on all four (Legs and hands). The chimpanzee diet is comprised of a variety of options and they are not pure vegetarian as counterpart gorilla species. They eat a lot of plant leaves, fruits, insects, small antelopes and sometimes kill monkeys for a meal.

Uganda is the best chimpanzee trekking destination in East Africa. The country has several chimpanzee trekking destinations like Kibale Forest which has the highest population of eastern chimpanzees. Let us briefly look at these major destinations where you can have the ultimate chimpanzee trekking experience.

Kibale National Park is located in Western Uganda about a 6-hour drive from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The park covers a land area of 766 square kilometers comprising tropical rainforests that are home to various wildlife species. These include 13 primate species, over 320 bird species, and other big mammals including forest elephants and giant forest hogs.

Kibale Forest National Park stands out as the best chimpanzee trekking destination in Uganda and East Africa in general. Uganda chimpanzee trekking adventures in Kibale are outstanding as you meet the chimpanzees in their most preferred habitats. The chimpanzee trekking experience starts early morning with a briefing at the park headquarters.

After the briefing, you are then guided by rangers for a hike amidst the sighting of various wildlife species. Chimpanzees are mobile you have to keep up as they move or jump from one Tree to another. You are allowed up to an hour in the presence of chimpanzees observing and getting to know them. You are expected to keep at least 7 meters away from them and withdraw in case they come towards you.

You can opt for the chimpanzee habituation experience if you are interested in spending more time with the chimpanzees. This gives you more time and you start early following the routine of the chimpanzees.

Kyambura Gorge Forest

Kyambura Gorge Forest is located in Queen Elizabeth National Park in the Kichwamba area. This forest is an underground one in the gorge that covers about 11 kilometers. It is dissected by River Kyambura links to the Kazinga channel. The gorge is a unique place to see chimpanzees and one of the best Uganda chimpanzee trekking destinations.

The view of the forest and the gorge is breathtaking and it gets better when you hike down the river and the forest trails. Kyambura Gorge is not just home to chimpanzees but also other primates including red-tailed monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, and colobus monkeys.

The chimpanzee numbers here are minimal compared to Kibale National Park but you still enjoy exclusive primate trekking experiences.

Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu forest is another important Uganda chimpanzee trekking destination. It is located in Bushenyi and covers a land area of 137 square Kilometers. The forest is home to chimpanzees and many other primates and birds.

Chimpanzee trekking here is reliable and exclusive as few people visit the forest compared to Kibale. The forest can be accessed via Kichwamba when coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park. We, therefore, recommend people who intend to trek chimpanzees here stay in the Kichwamba area ahead of the adventure. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to Kalizu forest. The chimpanzee trekking experience here also starts with a briefing after which you are guided for the trek.

The other notable primates here include blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and Vervet monkeys among others. Adventures here are complemented by savanna wildlife experiences in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest is located in mid-western Uganda in Kiryandongo District. It covers a land area of 435 square kilometers that is mainly made up of tropical rainforests. The forest is strategically located on the way to Murchison Falls National Park and is also home to chimpanzees. Budongo is home to several other wildlife species including birds, mammals among others.

This forest is among Uganda’s underrated and less explored primate destinations yet exclusive and offers remarkable primate trekking experiences. On-foot chimpanzee trekking is the main activity done here and it is truly remarkable and rewarding. You can have an overnight at the accommodation facility nearby and have a chimpanzee trek the following day. From there proceed to Murchison Falls National Park for savanna wildlife experiences and a boat cruise along the Nile.

Uganda chimpanzee trekking adventures are fun if Budongo forest primate expeditions are fully incorporated into the itineraries.

Bugoma Forest

Bugoma forest is located in Hoima in western Uganda. It is among the greatly threatened natural forests in Uganda facing deforestation as some people are trying to create land for a sugar plantation. The forest just like the others is home to a number of wildlife species with about 23 mammal species including chimpanzees, over 200 bird species, butterflies, and amphibians among others.

Even though Bugoma forest is not a popular chimpanzee trekking destination, it has a reasonable number of chimpanzees that need to be conserved and protected. The chimpanzee trekking activity that goes on here is limited but very enjoyable as it is exclusive.

A lot of conservation efforts are in place to ensure the limited destruction of the forest which also means the continued survival of all the wildlife species here including chimpanzees.

At Discovery Journeys we aim at conservation and all our safaris are eco-friendly always advocating for the protection of nature and culture. You can be part of these and explore these leading Uganda chimpanzee trekking destinations for a better understanding of nature and the numerous species therein.

Our Chimpanzee Trekking Tours

Our major Primate Discovery Journeys in Uganda feature chimpanzee trekking. The 7 Days Uganda Safari is ideal but 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys Adventure is even greater with leading savanna wildlife destinations like Murchison Falls National Park.

Other primate Discovery Journeys feature mountain gorilla trekking. This can be done in Uganda or Rwanda depending on your preference. You can opt for a 3-day Uganda Habituation tour for more time in the presence of the gorillas.

Ironman Triathlon Rwanda Edition. Discovery Journeys

What To Know About Rwanda The Host of Ironman 70.3 Edition

Rwanda is scheduled to host the Ironman Triathlon this year. Ironman Triathlon is a series of long-distance multi-sport races that comprise cycling, swimming, and running various distances. Races start at 7:00 am lasting for about 16 to 17.  Participants are expected to have completed their race of the different activities they are competing for during that time.

The cut-off time for the swimming competition for example is 2 hours 20 minutes covering 3.86 kilometers. Participants have transition cut-off times. The whole race and competition has to fall within 16 to 17 hours from the time athletes’ begin. Those who successfully make it and finish within that time frame are designated Ironmen.

Ironman Triathlon started in the late 1970s. There was a debate about whom among the runners, swimmers and cyclists is more fit. With this, then U.S. Commander John Collins suggested that there should be a race combining all three major competitions. The winner of any race within a particular time was to be given the title Ironman.

Gordon Haller was the first person to win the title having finished his race within 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds. The competition gained attention since then as more participants from all over the world showed interest.

Ironman Triathlon Today

The Ironman Triathlon competition is still vibrant and even more popular today. Its format and organization have not changed and it is now organized in different parts of the world. Hawaii is the pioneer place where the first Ironman Triathlon took place. The Hawaiian competition is much honored and regarded as the most prestigious of all.

Rwanda is the first African country to host the Ironman triathlon event. It is scheduled to place on the 5th of August. It will be a qualification competition for the 2024 VinFast Ironman 70.3 World Championships slated for the 14th & 15th of December 2024.

There are several Uganda Tour Destinations where you can trek to the chimpanzees and other monkey species. They include Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kalinzu Forest, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and others.

All the above mentioned Uganda Tour destinations are remarkable but the country has more to offer. Several other less-traveled Uganda tour destinations offer more exclusive and intimate safari experiences. They include the following;

Lake Mburo National Park is located in western Uganda. It is among the smallest but very diverse protected areas in Uganda. This and Kidepo Valley National Park are the only two national parks in Uganda with zebras. Giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, waterbucks, and antelopes are also present in Lake Mburo National Park.

This park is home to several bird species and is among the best birding Uganda safari destinations. The park is strategically located along the western circuit route and can be visited on the way to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is surrounded by farms of the native Ankole people who are predominant cattle keepers. The Ankole people rear Ankole long-horned cattle a prominent cattle breed that is restricted to Uganda. On a community visit there you experience the cattle-keeping process and get a chance to milk cows.

Lake Mburo National Park is best explored on game drives, nature walks, horse riding, boat cruises, and cycling. Our 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys Adventure features this park and it is among our best Uganda safari adventures.

This beautiful national park is located in western Uganda in the Semuliki Valley of the Great Rift Valley. The park has a diverse ecosystem but the most outstanding is the lowland tropical forest. Semuliki is home to over 440 Bird species and 53 mammals. Several primates occur here and notable ones include black and white colobus monkeys, red red-tailed monkeys among others.

Apart from wildlife, Semuliki Valley National Park has hot springs that are truly iconic. The ever-heated water sprouts out the earth’s surface with pressure at the female Hot Spring. Tourists who visit Semuliki boil eggs in the hot springs water for under 5 minutes. It is a great experiment to try out while visiting the park.

You can engage in various safari activities exclusively on a visit to Semuliki. They include nature walks, birding tours, game drives in the reserve, and a boat cruise on Lake Albert. There you get to see the various wildlife species the park has. It is easy to incorporate a visit to Semuliki on a Uganda Discovery Journeys adventure. From Kibale National Park you can visit Semuliki and explore the park before proceeding to Queen Elizabeth National Park. You would need at least 12 to 14 days for a Uganda safari featuring Semuliki Valley.

Mgahinga Gorilla Park is the other mountain gorilla trekking destination in Uganda. It is also located in southwestern Uganda with one habituated gorilla family. Mgahinga Gorilla Park is the extension of the Virunga massif on the Ugandan side. It has 3 iconic Virunga volcanoes that include Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura & Mount Sabyinyo. These mountains are attractions but also ecosystems and home to several wildlife species with mountain gorillas being the most outstanding.

What makes gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla Park exclusive is the presence of only one gorilla family. Gorilla trekking is strictly restricted to only 8 individuals a day. This means that in Mgahinga only 8 people get to visit the park for a gorilla trekking on a busy day. If you are fortunate in the low tourist season you could end up trekking to the mountain gorillas exclusively.

Other notable wildlife species here include golden monkeys, birds, and plant vegetation species. All these and the exclusivity of the Park make it one of the best Uganda Tour destinations. At Discovery Journeys, we mainly aim to explore such exclusive destinations. Mgahinga is therefore among our most recommended Uganda Safari destinations for mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking, birding, and mountain climbing.

Pian Upe Reserve

Pian Upe Reserve is located in Eastern Uganda along the less traveled North Eastern tourism circuit. The reserve has a unique ecosystem similar to that of Kidepo Valley National Park. Pian Upe Reserve has had wildlife-human conflicts where several wildlife species went extinct because of human activities like poaching.

There have been efforts from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to restore the reserve and its wildlife. With this, several species have been reintroduced to the reserve. Some of the notable safari animals in Pian Upe include giraffes, Roan antelopes, elands, Kobs, and birds. Many of these can be seen while on game drives or guided nature walks in the reserve.

Pian Upe is in the process of being upgraded to a national park. Once this is done the reserve will be Uganda’s largest national park. We are confident that with time Pian Upe will top the list of the most visited Uganda Tour Destinations.

This is the most isolated national park located in the Karamoja region in northwestern Uganda. The park is truly iconic with beautiful landscapes and an undisturbed ecosystem.

Kidepo Valley National Park is located in a semi-desert area and some of the Rivers dry out in the dry season. The Narus Valley is the only place in the park with water and several animals gather here even on hot days to freshen up. The park is the least visited Uganda Tour Destination because of the time and distance it takes to get there. It takes a 9 to 10-hour drive from Kampala to Kidepo.  There is an option of flying with scheduled flight routines that depart with minimum numbers or charter flights that are a bit expensive.

Uganda Safari is Kidepo are fruitful and we highly recommend this to people with more time to explore the Pearl of Africa.

The dry season also doubles as the peak tourist season and a number of lodges and camps get fully booked. You are therefore advised to book your safari in advance.

The wet season is also a great time to visit as it is easy to spot wildlife. The rains favor the growth of lush vegetation and major grazers do not therefore go far to look for pasture. For this reason, people with severe cases of flu are not allowed to track mountain gorillas.

Individuals below the age of 15 are also not allowed to track gorillas. They are young and minors and may fail to manage the hike through the forested mountains. Individuals with serious health complications if they insist on trekking are advised to hire porters or sedan chairs to rescue them in case they fail.

What To Wear

It is also recommended to wear clothes that are not brightly colored. Given that gorilla trekking is done in the forested mountains, rainfall is very unpredictable and can occur at any time of the day.
