Uganda Safari Tour Activities to Queen Elizabeth National PARK

Uganda Safari Tour Activities To Do In Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park also known as Kazinga National Park is among the leading Uganda Safari tour destinations. It is located in western Uganda about a 6 to 7 hours drive from Kampala Uganda’s capital city. This fascinating wildlife destination is very diverse and full of wonders.

It covers a land area of 1,978 square kilometers of open savannas, wetlands, crater lakes, and other landscapes. It is in these ecosystems where you find the various wildlife species that make the park a populous Uganda safari tour destination.

There are a number of activities you can engage in here but let us look at the Top Must Do.

Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

The Kazinga Channel is a water channel that connects Lake Edward to Lake George. The Kazinga channel is not an ordinary channel but a 32-kilometer-long water stream and several meters wide. It is famous for its high hippo population that are often seen relaxing on the shallow banks. Kazinga channel has the highest hippo population in the region and this is therefore the best place to see them.

The channel is a major water source where animals go down the stream on hot days for water. These also include elephants, lands largest mammals. Other notable animals you can see here include Nile Crocodiles, Birds and monitor lizards.

A Kazinga channel boat cruise is highly recommended on a Uganda Safari Tour. It takes about 2 hours of Discovery Journeys and adventures.

The Kyambura Gorge is situated at the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It has an underground forest that is home to chimpanzees and other primates. Chimpanzee trekking here is exclusive even when compared to Kibale National Park.

Chimpanzee trekking adventures here differ from other destinations is however done in that underground forest. The gorge is also traversed by Kyambura River and the overall nature walks are rewarding. The River, the forest, the gorge, and if lucky the chimpanzees can make a great highlight of your Uganda Safari Tour down here. Be sure to add chimpanzee trekking or just the nature walk to this beautiful gorge.

If you are looking for more chimpanzee trekking opportunities you can also opt to visit Kalinzu Forest. This is about a 40-minute drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park in Bushenyi district. It is managed by the National Forests Authority and has a number of primates but chimpanzees are the leading attractions. Chimpanzee trekking adventures here can well compensate for the missed opportunities in Kyambura Gorge.

Predator Tracking

Savanna’s leading predators especially lions and leopards are game changers of any safari. A Uganda Safari Tour adventure without spotting these is not considered a success. Thankfully the predator tracking experience in Queen Elizabeth National Park guarantees you of seeing these big cats.

On the predator tracking you join a team of wildlife specialists who monitor these big cats daily. You get to learn about the role these Big Cats play in the ecosystem and food chain. Join our Uganda Safari Tour adventures in Kazinga National Park to learn more.

The biggest advantage of predator tracking is the guarantee of seeing them. Predators are nocturnal animals that are usually active in the night and early mornings. By the time one heads out for game drives a number of these are retiring and resting. Solitary animals like the leopards spend most of their time in hiding but can easily be spotted on predator tracking.

Just like many other savanna national parks, game drives are the commonly done safari tour activities here. There are a number of well-developed game drive tracks where you can spot the major wildlife species in the park. Four of the big five mammals (Lions, leopards, Buffaloes, and elephants) are present here. Waterbucks, The Topi, Kobs, and Warthogs are also seen while on game drives.

It is recommended to have these game drives early morning at least from 6:00 am when the animals are still active. It is this early when you might even chance a live-action predator hunting. Evening game drives are also very rewarding and here you get to enjoy the sunset over the savannas.

Nature walks

At Discovery Journeys, we focus on experiential and exclusive safaris, and on nature walks you enjoy such one-on-one moments in the wild. Thanks to the diverse ecosystems in Queen Elizabeth National Park, there are many places where you can have guided nature walks. The Crater areas are remarkable with impressive scenic views. At the end of the crater walks you can enjoy bush breakfast and sundowners.

The Kyambura Gorge and the Immaramagambo forest walks are great for birders and primate lovers. There is a bat cave in the Immaramagambo forest that can only be explored on foot. Other notable wildlife species to see here include the African Rock Python and other small reptiles.

These safari experiences in Queen Elizabeth National Park are just a glimpse of the few you can have on a Uganda Safari Tour. To fully explore Uganda, you would have to add other safari destinations including the mountain gorilla trekking national parks. Because mountain gorilla trekking is currently the most demanded safari activity, you are recommended to book your safari in advance. See a list of our Uganda Safaris and Contact us for more details. All our tours are tailor-made and can therefore add or remove an activity depending on your preference.

Tanzania Photography Safari with Discovery Journeys

Top Tanzania Photography Safari Destinations

Tanzania Photography safari experiences have over the years gained popularity. Tanzania is diverse and one of the leading destinations adventure lovers look out for photography safaris. It is located in East Africa with a land area of 947,303 square kilometers. Tanzania borders the Indian Ocean to the east with a coastline of 1,424 kilometers.  It was the East African Community’s largest country before the Democratic Republic of Congo joined the regional integration block.

Tanzania’s large size gives it an advantage in diversity and wildlife numbers compared to countries like Rwanda and Burundi. It is therefore not surprising that the country has top wildlife safari destinations that are ideal for photography safari experiences.

Planning photography Discovery Journeys to Tanzania can be tricky when it comes to destination choice. In this article, we will be looking at the Top 5 Tanzania Photography Safari destinations.

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of the best southern Tanzania photography destinations. The park covers a total land area of 30,893 square kilometers and is the largest national park in Tanzania. It is home to various savanna wildlife species including elephants, lions, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards. Black rhinos and leopards are rarely seen.

Other notable safari animals in the park include zebras, wildebeests, wild dogs, cheetahs, hippos, and giraffes. Nyerere National Park’s location down south makes it less accessible and exclusive. This limited access gives an opportunity for the wildlife to thrive with minimal human disturbances. Wildlife safari adventures here are therefore as wild as they should be.

Such exclusivity, the park’s large size, and wildlife diversity make Nyerere National Park top the list of Tanzania photography Safari destinations. There is a section of the park that was reserved for wildlife photography safaris. If you are an avid wildlife photographer be sure to add Nyerere National Park to your Tanzania Wild South Adventure.

Serengeti National Park is the most famous and visited national park in Tanzania. It is located in Northern Tanzania covering a land area of 14,763 square kilometers. Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara form a great wildlife ecosystem where the renowned wildebeest migration takes place. The wildebeest migration is an annual animal movement over the Serengeti and Masai Mara open plains in search of pasture.

The wildebeest migration involves over 1 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and Thompson gazelles. These Serengeti ecosystem’s leading herbivores graze the open savanna plains attracting predators on their journey up north and back. Serengeti and Masai Mara have the highest predator concentration with lions, leopards, cheetahs, and carnivores like hyenas. These depend on the migration hunting their prey in groups of up to 10 individuals. Predators also take advantage of the young and defenseless calves and new borns.

Live action along the wildebeest migration journey is remarkable. Such moments are amazing and humbling to capture on camera and many safari photographers yearn for them. This in particular makes Serengeti National Park an outstanding Tanzania photography Safari destination.

Serengeti’s calving period is another great natural phenomenon to watch on a Tanzania Photography Safari. Over 5,000 calves are born daily and such births are often witnessed while on photography Safaris. This happens between January to March as migrating herds move from the Ndutu conservancy to southern Serengeti. Our 8-day Serengeti Safari is ideal for Serengeti National Park photography Safari and overall experiences. If you do not have all the 8 Days then, the 4 Days Serengeti Safari can work perfectly.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is another incredible wildlife and Tanzania photography Safari destination in the south. Southern Tanzania safari adventures are our true kind of Discovery Journeys adventures because of exclusivity. It serves well for wildlife photographers because of the need to focus, listen, as one waits for the perfect moment.

Just like Nyerere National Park, Ruaha is truly diverse with large animals numbers. Four of the big five mammals are present here with Elephants, buffaloes, and lions in plenty. Hippos, zebras, and giraffes are also plenty and are perfect to capture giving one true African Safari vibes.

Ruaha’s vegetation is unique comprising baobab trees that are believed to be the oldest plant species on the planet. River Ruaha is the main source of water where animals gather on hot days to cool down. There are other leading safari destinations in southern Tanzania and our 10 Days Southern Tanzania covers them. This is the most recommended safari for photography safari experiences in the south.

If you are interested in unique experiences from the usual big five safaris then a fishing safari is ideal. Book the 5-day Tanzania fishing safari with a chance to catch the Blue Tigerfish, Tanzania’s most after fish. The 5 Days Southern Safari is also a good option to look at.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s natural wonders located in northern Tanzania. Ngorongoro is the world’s largest unfilled caldera and a unique attraction in its own right. The crater has relief features including a Riverine swamp and a crater lake that are home to diverse wildlife species.

Black rhinos, elephants, lions, zebras, and wildebeests are often seen freely roaming on the crater floor. Ngorongoro is a birders’ haven with notable bird species including the Kori bustard one of the largest bird species.

Tanzania Photography Safari experiences in Ngorongoro are unique because wildlife is easily spotted within this natural enclosure. There are well-developed game drive trails giving one an opportunity to fully explore the crater. Ngorongoro is an ideal destination to explore even if you do not proceed to Serengeti if limited by time.

Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu Conservancy, and Serengeti National Park are the top 4 Northern Tanzania destinations. They form the famous northern circuit that offers the ultimate Africa Adventure experience. One may wonder how Tarangire effectively competes with others, especially the Crater and Serengeti. Well, Tarangire is a one-stop safari destination with its own mini wildlife migration and the best place to see elephants in Tanzania.

Savanna’s favorite safari animals including elephants, zebras, and wildebeests migrate to Tarangire around June. This is one beautiful and unique wildlife migration that the famous wildebeest migration does not match. Migrating animals are incredible to capture on a photography Safari and give one an ideal Classic Safari Experience.

Tarangire is often ignored by many and the tourist crowds here as not as those in Serengeti. You therefore get to enjoy exclusive photography safari experiences while on tour. For the best of a Northern Tanzania photography safari it is better to do an extensive safari featuring all northern destinations. The 7-day Tanzania Safari and the 9-day Tanzania Safari options are ideal for that.

Other Photography Safari Destinations

We organize tailor-made safari experiences for other destinations. These include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. Each of these destinations is beautiful and Photography safaris there are as great as one’s in Tanzania.

For primate lovers, you can hike the forested mountains and meet the rare and endangered mountain gorillas. You can actually combine a gorilla trekking and Tanzania wildlife adventure on a photography expedition. A 3-day Uganda Gorilla Tour, a 3-day Rwanda Gorilla Tour, and a 5-day Rwanda Safari are some of those you can consider adding to a Tanzania photography safari. A Primate mountain gorilla trekking adventure and a savanna wildlife safari is the ultimate Discovery Journeys adventure.

Discovery Journeys Day Trips

Discovery Journeys Top Day Trips To Be Part Of

Day Trips Discovery Journeys are the most efficient ways to explore any tour destination.  Many travelers are usually restricted by time while in some destinations and end up going for Day trips. This is quite challenging sometimes, especially in African destinations with diverse wildlife where one would wish to spend more time exploring. Apart from diversity, several African safari destinations are located upcountry and one would require more than 5 hours to get there. This makes it hard to take on Discovery Journeys adventures to such destinations in a short period of time.

Thankfully, there are some destinations you can explore on Day trips while in the region. Below are some of the Top Day Trips and Discovery Journeys adventures you can be part of.

Mountain gorillas are currently the most sought-after primate species. With over 95% DNA similar to humans, mountain gorillas are among man’s closest primate species. They live in the forested mountains of the Virunga massif and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Of all the mountain gorilla trekking destinations, Volcanoes National Park is the most easily accessible.

Volcanoes National Park is located in North Western Rwanda about 3 hours drive from Kigali Rwanda’s capital city. Day Trips to this mountain gorilla trekking national park are possible with departures at 4:30 am from Kigali. The gorilla trekking experience starts with a briefing at the park headquarters at 7:00 am and everyone is expected to be there in time. During the briefing are told about the safety rules and regulations to observe while in the forest. After this, you are led on the gorilla trekking adventure to the gorilla family you would have been allocated. The hike takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas.

Once you get to them, you are required to keep a 7-meter distance. This is to avoid irritating the gorillas as they can charge when they feel threatened.  You are allowed to stay in the presence of the gorillas for an hour observing, taking photos and getting to know more about them.  After this remarkable encounter, you are led back to the starting point where you receive your certificates of participation. From there you are transferred back to Kigali or your preferred destination depending on your schedule. The 1 Day Rwanda gorilla tour is among the top Day trips in East Africa and we highly recommend it.

Kenya is a renowned wildlife safari destination that many adventure lovers like to explore. When one mentions Kenya, big-name safari destinations like Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park come to mind. These are however located far away from Nairobi Kenya’s capital and one might need at least 3 Days to Visit them.

Kenya however has a national park within the city proximity that you can visit on Day Trip Discovery Journeys. Nairobi National Park just like many other Kenya safari destinations is very diverse. The Park is home to various wildlife species including lions, giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and buffaloes among others. There are also over 400 bird species recorded here.

You can engage in a number of safari activities while visiting Nairobi National Park. These include game drives, guided walks, birding adventures, picnics, and sundowners among others. While in Nairobi looking for day trips to be part of ensure to add Nairobi National Park on your list.

Shoebill Birding Adventure

Birding safari adventures are a well-established niche in the tourism industry. Fortunately, East Africa has several bird species and bird lovers enjoy their time on birding Discovery Journeys. Birding Safaris however require  al ot of time and one might assume it is not possible to go on birding Day trips.

Uganda has an answer to that and even better, you get to see one of the most rare and sought after bird specie, the shoebill stork. This prehistoric bird lives in wetlands and the Mabamba Bay on Lake Victoria is the best place to see it. Birding Day trips to Mabamba are adventurous as you are driven through the different waterways on motorized canoes.

Mabamba has several bird species but the shoebill stork stands out.  It is impressive to watch and can easily be spotted because of its large size. Shoebill storks prefer the mashy vegetation for prey as they mainly feed on fish and other aquatic animals including snakes. Watching the shoebill stork swallow its prey in its gigantic beak gives you a real-time jungle experience. Ensure to add this birding excursion on your Uganda Safari adventures as you will never regret it.

Mikumi National Park is among the best southern Tanzania wildlife safari destinations. Unlike the Northern Tanzania tourism circuit destinations like Serengeti and Ngorongoro, southern Tanzania is remote and less explored. Many of these destinations are located deeper in the Tanzania wilderness but Mikumi National Park is exceptional.

The Park is home to major savanna safari animals including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeests among others. Lions, giraffes, hippos, wild dogs, leopards, and hyenas are also present in the park though rarely seen. It takes a 4-hour drive from Dar-es-Salaam to Mikumi National Park which is manageable on a Day trip. While in the park you can enjoy game drives, birding safaris, and sundowners before heading back to the city arriving in the evening.

In case you have more than a Day, you can opt for longer safari options depending on where you are at. In southern Tanzania, the 5-Day Southern Tanzania Safari is a great option to look at. Those seeking unique wildlife experiences can opt for a 5-Days Tanzania fishing Safari adventure still down south. On this adventure, you engage in sport fishing in remote Tanzania and a Safari in Nyerere National Park.

For primate lovers, Uganda and Rwanda got you covered. The 10-Days Rwanda Safari features Nyungwe forest for chimpanzee trekking and Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorillas. Other primates species you can see on this safari include golden monkeys and colobus monkeys. You also get to visit Akagera National Park Rwanda’s only savanna park. Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Safaris

Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Safaris

Kibale Chimpanzee trekking Safaris are leading primates expeditions one should be part of when exploring Uganda. Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda about a 5 to 6 hours drive from Kampala Uganda’s Capital City. The national park covers a land area of 776 square kilometers of mainly tropical rain and montane forests.

The park is popularly known as the primate capital of the world because of the various primate species it has including chimpanzees. It has the highest population of eastern chimpanzees making it the best and ultimate chimpanzee trekking destination. Other than the chimpanzees, the other 12 primates present here include the L’hoest monkeys, Colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, the Uganda Mangabey, and blue monkeys among others. The park is also home to large mammals including forest elephants, buffaloes, and giant forest hogs though chimpanzee trekking is the main activity done here.

Chimpanzee Trekking Safaris

There are two Kibale chimpanzee trekking safaris that include the normal chimpanzee trek and the chimpanzee habituation experience. The normal chimpanzee trekking is a half-day experience that starts with a briefing at the park headquarters. Kibale National Park has two sessions for this (early morning and Afternoon trekking) with the first departing at 8:00 am and the other at Noon.

Normal chimpanzee trekking safaris are rewarding as you hike to meet chimps in their habitats. They features a guided walk to the forest in search for habituated chimpanzee communities. Chimpanzees are very mobile and active during morning hours. You, therefore, have to keep up to avoid missing out on real time moments.

Once you get to the chimpanzee community you are required to keep at least 7 meters away from them. Flash photography and noise are also prohibited as they can disrupt the chimpanzee’s normal activity.

The chimpanzee habituation experience on the other hand involves participating in the habituation process. The habituation of wildlife is intended to make them accustomed to human beings’ presence in their midst. Even though chimpanzees are man’s closest relatives with over 98% DNA similar to humans, when not habituated they can be wild at the sight of people. Chimpanzee habituation is therefore crucial and the experience takes you behind the scenes of the whole process.

Chimpanzee Trekking Permits

There are limited chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation experience permits. Kibale national park is the most visited chimpanzee trekking destination and chimpanzee permits get fully booked in advance. The number of tourists on chimpanzee trekking safaris are limited to minimize chances of behavioral change in the primate species. This is similar to Mountain gorilla trekking where only 8 individuals are allowed to trek to a gorilla family per day.

It is therefore important for anyone interested in Kibale chimpanzee trekking adventures to book in advance. If you intend to visit in the peak tourist season from June to September then it is advisable to book 3 months in advance.

Best time to Visit

Kibale chimpanzee trekking safari experiences can be enjoyed any time of the year. For best safari moments and photography we recommend visiting in the dry season from June to September. It is easy to navigate through the forest during the dry season with minimal rainfall disturbances. Best photography moments with natural lighting are experienced during the dry season.

Other Uganda Primate Safari Destinations

Kibale is not the only chimpanzee trekking destination in Uganda. We feature destinations for Uganda chimpanzee trekking adventures that can be combined in a tailor-made primate safari. This gives you an opportunity to study these primate species and the habitats where they live.

Uganda is a prime destination for chimpanzees, mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and colobus monkeys. The country has several tropical rainforests ideal for primate trekking safaris.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda is a renowned habitat for mountain gorillas. It has the highest mountain gorilla population distributed in the different sectors the park has. These include Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors. Bwindi has a reasonable chimpanzee population that will be habituated and open to tourism.

The Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to chimpanzees and several other primates. It is referred to as the Valley of Apes and offers exclusive encounters with chimps.

Budongo Forest, Kalinzu Forest and the Immaramagambo forest reserves are other notable primate trekking destinations to look out for.

Primate Discovery Journeys

For a diverse wildlife encounter, we combine Kibale chimpanzee trekking adventures with other primates and savanna wildlife adventures. On our Uganda Safaris, you can choose a 7 Days Uganda Wildlife Safari that features a visit to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks. This focuses on chimpanzees and mountain gorillas trekking with a savanna safari break in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys is the ultimate open savanna and primates experiences. Contact us for availability and other bespoke safari adventures.

Where to stay

Kibale National Park is facilitated by several accommodation options. These range from budget to luxurious all inclusive safari lodges.

Mid range options include Turaco Tree Tops, chimpanzee forest lodge, Isunga Lodge and Rubalika Safari Lodge. These are located with a few minutes drive to the park headquarters and are ideal to base from when on primate Discovery Journeys.

Tarangire National Park Adventures are some of the outstanding adventures on the northern Tanzania tourism circuit. The park is located in Northern Tanzania and together with Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu conservation area and Lake Manyara form the famous northern tourism circuit.

This Northern tourism circuit has the most famous Tanzania Safari destinations and experiences. These include the Big cats, wildebeest migration safaris, birding, and other leading classic African Safari experiences in Serengeti National Park. The Ngorongoro Crater is an attraction itself but also a great place for safaris featuring the big five mammals, birds, and other safari animals including zebras and wildebeests.

Lake Manyara National Park has the Lake as the leading attraction but there are various safari animals present here. The Ndutu Conservancy is a great place for the big cats and the wildebeest migration also pass here. All these places and experiences make the north more competitive than the Southern Tanzania Safari experiences. Safari destinations in the south are however exclusive and offer great opportunities for wildlife encounters.

Tarangire National Park Adventures are more exclusive when compared to Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater. This is because the park is not frequented as much as the latter destinations. Let us briefly look at the park and what makes it unique.

About Tarangire National Park

The park covers a land area of 2,850 square kilometers and it is the 6th Largest national park in Tanzania. It was named after River Tarangire which crosses the park. This also doubles as the primary source of water for the various wildlife species in the Park.

Just like many other destinations in Tanzania, Tarangire also has a diverse ecosystem. This mainly includes savanna grasslands and woodlands, baobab trees, swampy vegetation that often floods in the dry season, and a few ridges and valleys. It is in this ecosystem you find the various wildlife species the park has.

Wildlife Species in Tarangire

Tarangire is most famous for its elephant herds. Over 300 of these can be seen while on game drives in the park, especially in the dry season. Giraffes, hippos, zebras, buffaloes, and lions are also commonly seen here.

The park has its own wildlife migration where you can Catch up with migrating safari animals including the wildebeest, hartebeests, gazelles, and zebras among others. This migration is very spectacular and offers you an opportunity for a variety of wildlife viewing. It is also exclusive and more enjoyable compared to the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration.

There are over 500 bird species recorded here which also makes it a great birding safari destination. In terms of vegetation, the Boabab tree one of the longest-living plant species stands out. You can spot a number of these while in the area and study about them.

Discovery Journeys in Tarangire

There are quite a number of activities and Discovery Journeys you can be part of when in Tarangire National Park. They mainly include game drives on which you will see at least 90% of the wildlife species in the park. It is usually recommended to start early morning to catch up with the early risers, especially the predators.

Even Lions are easily seen while on safari here, they are most active during early morning and evening hours. Having a game drive early morning or in the evening is therefore highly recommended if you want to see live predator action that can include hunting.

For those interested in a panoramic view of the park, balloon safari adventures are organized here as well. A ride above the sky makes you appreciate Mother Nature and gives you a great and different perspective and wildlife.

Birding safaris are also organized here where you get to meet some of the notable bird species in the park. Some of the common birds seen on Tarangire National Park adventures include the Tawny eagle, the red-bellied parrot, and the Ashy starling which is also endemic to the park.

When to Visit

Overall Tanzania Safaris can be enjoyed in the dry season from June to October. This is also the dry season when various animals gather around River Tarangire to take water. It is also the time when wildlife migration happens and therefore the best recommended time to Visit. With the little rainfall disturbances, it is even easier to have game drives through the different trails in the park.

The wet months from November to May are also great times to visit as migratory birds are present here. The rainfall also enables the growth of lush vegetation that major grazers don’t go far and might be easily spotted as well. The peak of the wet season though in March and April has a high chance of rainfall and some game drive tracks get muddy.

Depending on the time you have in Tanzania, you can combine all the major destinations in the north. Our 7 Days Tanzania Safari features a game drive in Tarangire and other adventures in Ndutu, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. Our 9 Days Tanzania safari on the other hand is very extensive and includes a Night at Tarangire National Park.

Other than Tanzania, We also organize safari adventures to Volcanoes National Park featuring gorilla trekking and golden monkeys. Rwanda is most famous for primates which also includes chimpanzee trekking. You can therefore book a primate safari adventure to Nyungwe forest for chimpanzee trekking, and mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, and then Visit Northern Tanzania.

Nyungwe Forest Safari Experiences Beyond Chimpanzees

Nyungwe Forest Safari experiences are dominated by chimpanzee trekking. With this, one might think that chimpanzees are the only attractions in this forested national park. Nyungwe Forest is one of the leading primates and overall safari destinations in Rwanda. It is located in the southwestern part about a 5 to 6 hours drive from Kigali the capital city. The forested national park was established in 2004 and covers a land area of 1,019 square kilometers.

Nyungwe National Park is covered by montane rainforests and is considered the best-preserved forest in the region. The forest is also one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and has a divserse ecosystem comprising bamboo, grasslands, and wetlands. It is in these ecosystems that you find the different wildlife species including chimpanzees that are man’s closest primates. There are also over 1068 plant species that make Nyungwe Forest Safari experiences extraordinary. The Forest was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its diversity and wildlife value.

Nyungwe Chimpanzee Adventures

There are habituated chimpanzee communities with two major chimpanzee trekking sectors. Uwinka is the main trekking area but there is also the cyamudongo trekking sector towards Lake Kivu. The Kiyovu sector has also been opened up for the chimpanzee habituation experience.

Chimpanzee habituation is more experiential and allows you more than an hour in the presence of the chimpanzees. Both the normal Chimpanzee trek and habituation experiences in Nyungwe are remarkable as you get to meet these primates with over 98% DNA similar to humans. Even though these Nyungwe Forest Safari Experiences are remarkable, there are many other adventures you can be part of.

Below are some other wildlife safari activities that will make your Nyungwe safari unforgettable.

Birding Safari Experiences

The vegetation type and location of Nyungwe forest make it a prime birding safari area. The forest has over 322 bird species including 30 species endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley. Some of the bird species that occur here are restricted to Central African forests but a visit to Nyungwe for birding will give you an opportunity to see them.

Notable birds in Nyungwe include the Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, regal sunbird, and Blue-headed sunbird among others. Birding safaris in Nyungwe are done on foot following the different trails in the Park.

These birding safari experiences are possible throughout the year but for the best experiences it is best to Visit from November to May. During these months, birds are more vocal which enables easy spotting since Nyungwe birding mostly depends on calls. The dry season months from June to October are equally great for birding and overall Nyungwe Forest Safari experiences. There is usually minimal rainfall disturbances and the major hiking trails are dry and easy to navigate.

Canopy walk

Nyungwe forest has East Africa’s only and highest canopy walkway. This gives you an opportunity to watch this vast forest from an impressive panoramic view. Canopy walk expeditions also enable you to see wildlife species that live in the top canopy layers.

The Nyungwe Canopy walk experience has three scheduled departure times one in the morning, then mid-morning, and the last one in the afternoon. On these walks, you can truly appreciate the greatness of Nyungwe Forest and Rwanda at Large.

The Canopy walk is one of the best ways to explore the Nyungwe Forest ecosystem. It can be done alongside other safari activities in the park including chimpanzee trekking and other primate treks.

Colobus monkey Tracking

Nyungwe forest apart from chimpanzees has 12 other primate species. These mainly include colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, grey cheeked mangabeys and L’hoest monkeys among others. You can therefore take on other primate trekking adventures featuring any of the above primates. At the moment, colobus monkey trekking is the second popular Nyungwe Primate Safari adventure.  On it you still stand a chance of seeing other primates especially L’hoest Monkeys.

All these Nyungwe primate safari experiences start with a briefing at the park headquarters. From here you are guided through the thick forests enjoying the sights and sounds of nature and spotting these beautiful primates.

Primate trekking in Nyungwe is doable all year round and can be best enjoyed in the dry season. This is because the dry season has minimal rainfall interruptions providing great opportunities for photography and overall wildlife viewing.

Nature walks

Forests are best explored on foot and with the diversity of Nyungwe forest, guided nature walks are worth the adventure. There are a number of Well developed trails in the forests where nature walks are done. These feature iconic features including a waterfall.

Nature walks beyond the primate trekking experiences give you more chances of wildlife viewing and up close moments. They are also the best ways to explore the underrated plant world diversity in the Nyungwe forest. Other small wildlife species including butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians are easily spotted during these nature walks.

You can choose from a 2 to 4 hours guided nature walk depending on your preference and nature interests.  Our top seller Rwanda Discovery Journeys feature guided nature walks in Nyungwe Forest. They include a 5-Day Rwanda Safari and the 10-Day Rwanda Safari adventure. These are however combined with other Rwanda Safari destinations, especially Volcanoes National Park.

You can still choose to exclusively visit Nyungwe for primate trekking and birding Discovery Journeys. All our itineraries are custom made and can still be further customized depending on your preference and convenience.

Nyungwe Forest Safari adventures can be combined with Kenya Safari adventures featuring the wildebeest migration and Big Cats. Kenya and Tanzania have renowned for their open savanna ecosystems including Masai Mara and Serengeti National Parks. These greatly supplement the primate safaris in Uganda and Rwanda. Mountain gorilla in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. Uganda gorilla trekking adventures.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Adventures

Uganda Gorilla trekking adventures currently surpasses any form of wildlife safari adventures in Uganda. This landlocked East African country has the highest population of the remaining mountain gorillas. The total mountain gorilla population is currently estimated at 1100 individuals in the wild and Uganda has half of these.

Mountain gorillas are primates that live in the forested mountains in East and Central Africa. On the entire planet, mountain gorillas can only be found in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They even particularly live in the Virunga massif, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the Sarwambe Reserve.

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of Volcanic Mountains along the Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC border. Uganda has three of the 8 Virunga mountains though shared with her neighbors. It is in these mountains that you find mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is also in southwestern Uganda and Uganda gorilla trekking adventures here are very enjoyable.

Mgahinga Gorilla national park is the extension of the Virunga conservation area to Uganda. The three Virunga mountains in Uganda are protected in this national park. Mgahinga gorilla park however only has one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. This family initially used to cross over the border to Rwanda but eventually stabilized.

Uganda gorilla trekking adventures in Mgahinga gorilla park are very exclusive. The fact that only 8 people are allowed to track one mountain gorilla family a day means it is only 8 people who track this gorilla family. With this, you enjoy exclusive guided adventures in the Virunga mountains sighting other wildlife species there.

Gorilla trekking adventures here are also recommended for those interested in a similar experience as Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. The relief and vegetation type is the same in the Virunga massif and you get therefore get the same experience you would have in Rwanda and Virunga National Park.

Our 4 Days Mgahinga Gorilla Tour is the ideal one to fully explore the park. This features mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking. In case you would like to explore more you can add on a few days and also hike the mountains and other adventure activities in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.

This is the most famous Uganda gorilla trekking destination. To differ from the Virunga conservation area, Bwindi impenetrable National Park just like its name is covered with a tropical rainforest. The park is also hilly, unlike the Virunga mountains which have just one stand-alone mountain ranges.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 4 main gorilla trekking sectors each with habituated gorilla families. It is therefore advisable to book accommodation in the particular sector where you will be tracking as they are several distances apart and on the day of the gorilla trekking adventure you are expected at the sector’s park headquarters by 7:00 for a briefing.

This park having many gorilla families makes it the prime Uganda gorilla trekking destination. Gorilla trekking is however the most demanded primate activity and gorilla permits get fully booked. It is therefore advisable to book in advance to avoid missing out.

Our major Uganda gorilla trekking adventures feature Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They are however combined with other leading destinations in Uganda like Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking. The 7 Days Uganda Wildlife Safari is an example of this and the recommended ultimate primate trekking adventure. You can also do 10 Days Uganda Discovery Journeys adventure visiting savanna national parks for the big five mammals and more.

Explore Uganda with us on mountain gorilla trekking adventures for one on one moments with mountain gorillas and other exclusive safari moments.

Best time To Visit

The dry months from June to September and from December to March are the best and most recommended for gorilla trekking adventures. This is because mountain gorilla trekking is done on foot and on rainy days the trails are slippery. It is however still possible to track mountain gorillas in the wet season.

With the terrain and vegetation cover in the region, rainfall is very unpredictable. We therefore always share a packing list with our guests outlining what to wear for the gorilla trekking adventure. The raincoat is a Must. Waterproof pants are also highly recommended as well as long-sleeved shirts and hand gloves.

Other Uganda Safari Adventures

Uganda offers other incredible safari adventures. They include chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park the primate capital of the world. It is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species making it an incredible Uganda primate trekking destination.

You can also opt for savanna wildlife experiences in the Murchison Falls National Park. The park has four of the big five mammals and offers boat cruise adventures along the Nile River.
