This provides the best Kenya safari alternatives and will, in turn, reduce the pressure exerted on the savanna ecosystems.

Kenya Mountain biking safaris are remarkable and offer more up-close moments while on tour. Kenya is blessed with diverse landscapes offering impressive scenery ideal for biking safaris. The biking experience involves physical activity that, in turn, leaves participants physically fit. Such an experience is a game changer as more people are also seeking wellness travel where they can exercise and relax.

Loita Hills tops the list of Kenya Safari destinations ideal for mountain biking. The hills are a low-lying range located north of Masai Mara. They are a major grazing area for the native Masai people who have lived there for centuries.

Loita Hills are exclusive, providing the best opportunity for mountain biking with impressive scenic views. On a biking safari there, you can visit the Masai community with the majority still holding on to their African traditional values.

Lion and overall animal populations in Kenya have declined over the years, but the Tsavo ecosystem still has a reasonable number.

Notable animals you can spot on game drives include the red dust elephants, kudus, buffaloes, and hippos. Tsavo West has impressive scenery, from open plains to lava flows explored on biking safaris. Our 6-day Magical Kenya safari features Amboseli, Tsavo East, and Tsavo West National Parks. This can be customized to add in more experiences in any of the three destinations.

Best Time To Visit

Kenya can be visited at any time of the year. For the best biking and overall safari experiences, we recommend visiting during the dry season from June to September. December to March is also relatively dry and ideal for biking safaris.

Biking safaris rely on weather and are more feasible and enjoyable with limited or no rainfall disturbances. Mount Kenya biking trails, given the terrain, can only be best accessed during the dry season. Rainfall in mountainous areas is unpredictable and one needs to have rain gear.

Uganda Airlines To Launch Flight To London. Discovery Journeys

Uganda Airlines To Launch Flight To London

Uganda Airlines recently announced its plans to launch a direct flight to London. The airline is among Africa’s youngest and fastest-growing airlines. This development is a game changer in Uganda safari experiences and Discovery Journeys.

Uganda Airlines was revived in 2019 after over 18 years of closure due to financial and political compromises. Since its revival, the Airline has embarked on a strategy to expand its routes and flight coverage. It has so far covered the East African region well and is expanding to cover the European Market.

The airline secured a slot at London Gatwick International Airport, the UK’s second busiest airport after Heathrow. Uganda Airlines also added Airbuses to its fleet to cover such long-haul flights. The news of the new route and fleet was joyfully received in the travel industry as the United Kingdom is among Uganda’s Key source markets. Flights Entebbe and Gatwick are anticipated to start operating by the end of the year. There is hope for increased tourist flow between the two countries as travelers enjoy the advantage of a direct flight saving a lot of time.

The Significance of Uganda Airlines

Uganda Airlines is significant as a national carrier. It is a big brand that provides opportunities for tourism advertisements aboard all flights to its featured destinations. Airlines deal with hundreds of passengers daily with a large platform good enough for a destination like Uganda seeking publicity.

National Airlines are effective when traveling to their home countries because they operate direct flights there. Airlines when operating a connecting flight first fly to their home countries. This is as per the International Air Transport Regulations but wastes time as passengers wait in transit.

A national carrier like Uganda Airlines saves as you book direct flights if you intend to visit Uganda. Uganda Airlines operates flights to Eastern DRC and Burundi, opening up opportunities for exclusive Discovery Journeys. This has connected Uganda to other regional safari destinations combined on East African safari adventures.

Other airlines that serve the Pearl of Africa include Kenya Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airways, and Emirates. Kenya Airways has direct flights from New York to Nairobi. Wildlife photography is most rewarding during the dry season because of the natural light and golden hour moments.

The wet season months are equally great for wildlife viewing. The rains favor the growth of lush vegetation that offers impressive scenic views ideal for photography. When planning your Tanzania Wildlife Safari Adventure it is important to identify your safari interests and choose the most suitable destination to visit.

Best Time for A Tanzania Wildlife Safari Adventure

Tanzania Wildlife Safari Adventure experiences are doable any time of the year. The country lies within the tropics and has only two seasons, the dry and wet season. Safari experiences in the dry season are remarkable with minimal rainfall disturbances and the best light ideal for photography.

Game drive trails are dry and animals gather at particular water points where they can easily be spotted. National parks are however crowded as this is the time tourists visit in large numbers.

Tanzania’s wet season months from October to November and March to May are equally great for safari. The rains during these months favor the growth of lush vegetation providing fresh pastures for the herbivores. With this, animals are evenly distributed and equally be easily spotted. The green scenery is most impressive providing incredible photography safari opportunities.

The wildebeest migration follows seasons and the migrating herds move to the different sectors of Serengeti before crossing to Masai Mara. Ensure to note where the herds will be during your Tanzania Wildlife Safari Adventure to avoid missing them.

Where to Stay

All Tanzania safari destinations are supplements with several accommodation options ranging from budget to high-end exclusive camps. They are strategically located within the safari proximity making it easy to catch up with any scheduled activity.

Mountain gorillas are endangered apes that live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla Parks in Southwestern Uganda. These apes are unique because of their DNA similarity to humans.

Much as gorilla trekking safaris are exclusive and remarkable, Uganda Birding safari adventures are equally great. Birding is a niche of wildlife adventures that attract people interested in birds. Birding safari adventures work well in a destination with a diverse bird life like the way Uganda is.

The beauty of Uganda birding safari adventures is the exclusiveness of the whole experience. This enables one to closely study and connect with some of the most sought-after bird species. Uganda has several birding safari getaways but below are our top five recommendations.

They are solitary and only pair during the mating period with each most likely feeding on the opposite side. They build their nests along the floating swamp vegetation that they easily access. Shoebills share responsibility during the incubation period and when the eggs hatch. The young ones reach maturity at three to four years when they start to fend for themselves. On Uganda birding safari getaways to Mabamba, you get to learn more about the rare bird. The wetlands are home to other notable birds including the Grey Crowned cranes and fish eagles.

The high concentration of wildlife in the crater makes it a prime area for photography safaris. These feature all the mentioned safari animals and the impressive scenic views of the crater walls. Photography is best done in the morning and evening when the light is not sharp.

Other Safari Animals in Ngorongoro

There are several other safari animals on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. These include wildebeests, elands, gazelles, zebras, and hippos. All these are spotted on game drives in the different trails that the crater floor has.

Ngorongoro Crater Safari Experiences can be executed in a day excursion since it is easy to spot wildlife. For an extensive stay and journeys of discovery with the different wildlife, we recommend 2 days there.

Best time to Visit

The crater can be visited at any time of the year. During the wet season months, however, the lake floods cutting off a section of the crater floor. Game drive trails become muddy and can slow down your safari experience. Some lodges offer great discounts in the wet season and it can be a great time to travel if you want to save.

The dry season months from June to September and December to February are the best for overall wildlife viewing. The game drive trails are dusty but with minimal rainfall disturbances, you get an opportunity to fully explore the crater.

Where to stay

There are several accommodation options on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. They are located within an hour’s drive to the crater floor where most activities take place. Notable ones include Ngorongoro Lodge and the andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.

You can also stay in Karatu just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Karatu has several accommodation options including Kudu Lodge, Kankari Lodge, Farm of Dreams Lodge, and Karatu Tented Lodge. Karatu is about an hour and a half drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

Other exclusive Tanzania safaris

Tanzania offers other exclusive safari experiences including Tarangire National Park adventures. Tarangire is home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, Dik Diks, and several bird species. It is the best place in Tanzania to see elephants. These and many other wildlife species gather at the Tarangire River in the dry season to refresh.

Serengeti National Park is still an outstanding Tanzania safari destination. It is most famous for its wildebeest migration, Big Cats experiences featuring lions, leopards, and cheetahs, and birding adventures. Serengeti is best explored on game drives and balloon safaris. Our 7-day Tanzania safari and 9-day Safari feature the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Serengeti National Parks.

Ngorongoro Crater Safari Experiences and overall northern Tanzania Journeys can be combined with primate expeditions in Rwanda and Uganda. Kenya also offers great exclusive safari expeditions. These include encounters with rare wildlife species like the Grevys zebra, Oryx Beisa, and reticulated giraffes in Samburu National Reserve. Amboseli National Park adventures are epic as you journey with the elephants viewing Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

Mountain Gorillas In The Misty Rwanda Mountains. Discovery Journeys

Mountain Gorillas In The Misty Rwanda Mountains

Mountain gorillas are among the most sought-after primates. They belong to the ape family and live in the forested mountains in East Africa. Mountain gorillas are listed as endangered by the IUCN because their limited population is also threatened by habitat loss and poaching.

Their population is estimated at 1100 individuals with half living in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The rest live in the Virunga mountains that stretch along the Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC border.

Rwanda mountain gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park. The park is part of the Virunga Mountains and conservation along with Uganda’s Mgahinga and DRC’s Virunga National Park. Rwanda gorillas were made famous by the conservation works of Dian Fossey. Dian, an American primatologist lived in Rwanda in the late 1980s researching these rare primates. She was unfortunately murdered bringing an early end to her research and conservation works.

About Mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas just like their name suggests live in forested mountains. These are often covered in mist in the early morning hours and rainy days hence the name gorillas in the mist.

Mountain gorillas are among man’s closest primates with over 95% DNA similar to humans. With this, they share a lot of behaviors with humans starting from their family setting. Each mountain gorilla family is led by a dominant male called Silverback. The silverback oversees his family’s welfare and protects its territory from intruders. Other members of the family include females, juveniles, and infants.

The mountain gorilla’s diet mainly comprises plant leaves, shoots, and other edible wild fruits. They rarely drink water because the leaves are often covered with dew providing the water they need.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Procedures

There are several set rules and regulations to protect mountain gorillas. Given their DNA similarity with humans, they can easily contract some illnesses like flu and cough. With this, only 8 tourists are allowed to trek to each gorilla family day. While in their presence one is expected to keep a 7-meter distance. This is also intended to protect the integrity of their territory as they can charge when they feel threatened and overly encroached on.

Dumping and littering are strictly prohibited in the forest. Individuals on the gorilla treks are required to stay with the ranger guides to avoid straying away. This is because the forested mountains are home to other wildlife species like forest elephants and buffaloes that can be a threat to people.

One is also required to limit the noise including that of a camera shutter. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can irritate the gorilla. These trekking rules and regulations are communicated to those who intend to hike the misty mountains while at the park headquarters. Gorilla trekking is guided by well-knowledgable and experienced ranger guides who have trekked the forested mountains for years.

Best time to Visit

Rwanda gorilla trekking is doable any time of the year. For the best experiences we however recommend visiting in the dry season months from June to September and December to March. It is easy to Hike through the park in the dry season because of minimal rainfall disturbances.

Mountain gorilla photography and filming are also ideal during the dry season. The lighting is perfect for a destination like Volcanoes National Park that has a light bamboo forest. Rainfall is however sometimes unpredictable given the nature of the area. Guests are therefore recommended to have rain gear and gaiters just in case it happens.

The rains in the wet season months cannot deter someone from gorilla trekking. It just offers another way of adventure and experience of the Virunga mountains. Trekking to the gorillas in the rain enables you to see how they adapt to the changing climatic conditions.

Mountain Gorilla Packages

Rwanda gorilla trekking packages start from a 1-day and more. The 1-day tour starts with a pick up from Kigali at 4:30 am for a transfer to the park for a briefing. Briefing at the park headquarters is done between 7 to 8:00 am and one has to be there by 7:00 am. After the briefing and allocation of the gorilla family, you are guided on the hike in the park that lasts from 1 to 4 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas.

On meeting the mountain gorillas, you are allowed to stay in their presence for an hour following the guidelines. After this remarkable encounter, you are led back to the park headquarters for your certificates of participation and later driven back to Kigali.

The 1-day tour is not suitable for those who prefer spending more time at the park. There is an option of a 2-day and a 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour. One can also opt for a 4-day double gorilla trekking tour with two gorilla treks. This features a visit to two different gorilla families on different consecutive days.

Where to stay

Volcanoes National Park has several accommodation options ranging from budget to high-end luxurious options. The most convenient ones are under a 10-minute drive from the park headquarters. They include Bisate Lodge, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Da Vinci Lodge, Sambora Kinigi, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

All lodges near the park get fully booked during the peak tourist season from June to September. One should book their accommodation and gorilla permits in advance to avoid missing out.

Rwanda mountain gorilla trekking can be done alongside other safari adventures. These include chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest, golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park, and a visit to Akagera for a savanna wildlife safari. The Taste of Kenya Wildlife Adventures. Discovery Journeys

The Taste of Kenya Wildlife Adventures

Kenya wildlife adventures are the top Kenya safari tour experiences. Kenya is among the leading African Wildlife giants with over 20 National Parks and reserves. Most of these are open savannas home to the Big Five Mammals, Big Cats, Birds, and several other safari animals.

Meeting these in their natural habitats and most preferred homes is remarkable. This is the primary reason why wildlife adventures constitute over 90 percent of Kenya’s tourism.

At Discovery Journeys, we like to take on Kenya wildlife adventures, especially in the less traveled destinations. Some of the most prominent Kenya safari destinations like Masai Mara are still remarkable despite the tourist numbers they receive. Let us briefly look at some of these outstanding destinations plus any other information you could be interested in when planning your Kenya wildlife adventures.

Must Visit Kenya Wildlife Destinations

Masai Mara National Reserve tops the list of the must-visit Kenya wildlife destinations. The reserve stretches along the border with Tanzania and is connected to the Serengeti ecosystem where the wildebeest Migration takes place. Every year millions of wildebeests, zebras, and the topi cross the Mara and Talek Rivers as they migrate from Serengeti to Masai Mara.

The wildebeest migration has one of the highest animal concentrations of any savanna wildlife destination. This migration and River crossings alone are amazing experiences to be part of when in Masai Mara. Masai Mara also has a high Big cats population offering great chances of seeing lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Samburu National Park is another must-visit Kenya wildlife adventure destination. This is located in Northern Kenya and is most famous for its rare wildlife species. Notable wildlife species in Samburu include the Oryx Beisa, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, and gerenuk. Most of these do not occur in any other Kenya safari destination making Samburu Discovery Journeys exceptional.

Amboseli National Park is another key Kenya safari destination.  Amboseli is the land of the giants and the best place to see Mount Kilimanjaro. It also has a reasonable bird population including flamingos. We recommend Lake Turkana National Park for off-beaten path experiences.

Best Time for Kenya Wildlife Adventures

Kenya wildlife adventures can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The months from June to September are the peak tourist season months. They are also dry with nominal rainfall disturbances. You can easily spot different wildlife species during the dry season as they gather at waterholes to refresh.

Game drives, nature walks, and overall wildlife adventures are easily executed in the dry season. During that time you can get the best golden hour moments of the sunrise and sunset.

The wet season months from March to May and October to November are equally great for Kenya wildlife adventures. The rains favor the growth of lush vegetation, offering fresh pasture for the herbivores. In turn, the animals only move a short distance to access food and can easily be spotted. The green vegetation beautifies the scenery offering the best scenic photography moments.

Migratory birds from as far as Europe are present in the region from November to May. Kenya wildlife adventures featuring birding are therefore most rewarding during these months.

Kenya Safari Itineraries

We customize all our Kenya wildlife adventures based on one’s preference and convenience. For destinations like Masai Mara, we recommend at least a 4-day tour and more if one is to get the best of the Kenya safari. Individuals with limited time opt to fly to the different Kenya safari destinations to save time.

Our 3-day Masai Mara is ideal for those with limited time but would love to explore Masai Mara. The 6-day Kenya safari features a visit to Amboseli for Discovery Journeys with Elephants, the land’s largest mammals. From there, you proceed to Lake Naivasha for a boat cruise and end with an exploration of Masai Mara.

Our other 6-day Magical Kenya safari focuses on Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks. These two are famous for elephants and other safari animals including lions, zebras, buffaloes, and birds. We recommend the 10-day Kenya safari to those interested in extensively exploring Kenya. This exclusive Discovery Journeys safari features a visit to Samburu in Northern Kenya, an excursion in the Aberdare mountains, Lake Nakuru, and Masai Mara ending in Amboseli National Park. It is among our top sellers Kenya Wildlife Adventures.

Other East African Adventures

The East African region has other destinations other than that offer unforgettable wildlife adventures. Uganda for example has primates including mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. It is the best primate trekking destination in the region because of its numbers and diversity.

Chimpanzee trekking is done in Kibale National Park. The park is located in western Uganda and has the highest primate population. Chimpanzee trekking is done on foot amidst sightings of other wildlife species including birds. Our 7-day Uganda wildlife safari features a visit to Kibale and other amazing Uganda holiday adventures.

Rwanda is great for primate trekking as well featuring mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Mountain gorillas in Rwanda live in Volcanoes National Park which is located in the north-western part of the country. The park is part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of Volcanic mountains along the Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC border.

Tanzania is another must-visit destination for African wildlife adventures and Discovery Journeys. Northern Tanzania features destinations like Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park.
