Trip Overview

The 6-day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari features primates and savanna wildlife experiences. You will start your 6-day Rwanda Gorilla safari adventure in Akagera National Park home to the big five mammals. These include both black and white rhinos, elephants, Lions, buffaloes and leopards.

Other notable safari animals in Akagera National Park include giraffes, zebras, the topi, and many other antelopes. These mainly live in the northern sector of the park which has the highest animal concentration. You will enjoy a game drive here and a boat cruise along Lake Ihema. On the lake, you will see various wildlife including hippos, Nile crocodiles, and birds among others.

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's second most important birding area after Nyungwe National Park. Birding safaris here are very rewarding as you get to see several bird species including the rare shoebill stork.

From Akagera you will then proceed to Volcanoes National Park for the mountain gorilla treeking experience and more. In Volcanoes National Park you will track gorillas and golden monkeys. The park has 12 habituated gorilla families that are open to tourism and you will track one of these families. Golden monkeys are also rare primates that are endemic to the Virunga Massif. Volcanoes National Park is one of the few Virunga massif safari destinations with golden monkeys. You will also have a Kayaking adventure along River Mukungwa and a visit to the Ellen campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Here you will get to learn more about the great conservation works of Dian Fossey and the Conservation Journey Rwanda has been through.
